Generator Prices

Ok, I'm guess I'm old school and I'm having a hard time accepting the $200 cost for a rebuilt generator for my 165. I'm just shocked!! (funny, huh?) I've tried to buy a used one but that seems like panning for gold in the ocean. Is it just a given that it costs around $200 bucks to get charging again. Has anyone has good success putting in a new armature and fields and rebuilding it yourself?

Hello,
I assume you are referring to the dynamo. This answer is based on a similar rebuild of a Lucas unit as fitted to UK tractors.
The component parts should be simple. They should be available from non-genuine suppliers in your area. Bepco is the supplier that I would use in the UK and has worldwide connections. The field coils are normally held in by slotted screws. You will need something more than just a screwdriver to release them. The bearing and bush should be straightforward to replace. You will probably need a soldering iron to undo the field coils. The wrapping on them tends to rot so either replace them or rebind them. Brush replacement should be easy. You will need to 'park' the brushes for refittment. This is done by withdrawing the brush and holding it in place with the spring against it.
When you have it reassembled check that it spins freely with just the drag of the brushes on the armature.
It may not be necessary to replace the armature. If the brush area is worn it may be possible to have it skimmed with a lathe.
Fit the dynamo and touch a live wire to the small (field coil) terminal for several seconds, this will polarize the dynamo.
As a test make up a wire which connects the two terminals and with the engine at fast idle flash the wire to earth. You should get a significant flash. This indicates tha the dynamo is working OK.

steven.any relatives in new england? gen rebuild you should be able to handle with some time and coaching from this board,especially if the field and rotor test good.the rest is bearings and brushes,probably avaiable at napa

Unless you are intent on keeping your 165 original you might consider a conversion to a single wire alternator usually about $100-$150 plus a little time adjusting the bracketry. They have an internal voltage regulator.
