(It's NOT uncommon for a digital meter to throw a hissy fit and give weird readings 'cause of electrical "noise' generated by the ignition and charging system on these old beasts.)
It needs to be putting out about 7.4 Volts to fully charge the battery.
I thought the same thing Greg but turned out to be the Voltage Regulator. $26 fixed it.Lumpy, I just tried your method the motor died immediatly. Using the other methods stated on this board I'm sure I've got a bad generator.
