I can't recall ever seeing the temp guage on my '49A ever register anything over 180 degrees... and that was on a warm/hot summer day. During cool Fall jaunts, I'm lucky if it gets to 170 degrees. Of course, I don't know for sure that the gauge is accurate. I do not have shutters installed (yet).
1) What is the proper/best temp the engine should be operated at?
2) What is the best/easiest (I know, best and easy aren't usually the same!) way to test the gauge?
3) What are the consequences of NOT bringing the engine up to the proper temp before tooling down hilly country roads pulling a hayrack full of kids?
