Getting impatient. Krylon paint???

Hay folks... Completely stripping and repainting my little tractor is like tomorrow (always coming but never gets here). Getting closer and closer to the oven cleaner and pressure washer prep and painting it red. I can get paint in a qt can reasonable, but spray paint available is Krylon cherry red (ral 3001). Thinking about brushing everything and then spraybombomg the sheetmetal. It works a little everyday and parks under roof. Spraybombing the whole thing is getting more and more tempting also. No shows, just maybe an occassional ride with oldies.
How many coolpoints will the krylon cost me??? Can I put a little wax on it later for protectio`?

Thanks, Dave

If you have a compressor and spray gun available you can do a much better job and cheaper with it. I'm not an experienced painter, but the older synthetic enamels are easy to use. 95% of the work is in the prep and every time I have been disatisfied with my painting it has been the fault of the prep, not the painting. I have seen some very respectible paint jobs done with spray cans but I think a spray gun is better and cheaper. Just my opinion.

To spray large parts by rattle can will take much more than you think. First, the paint coats need to be pretty thin and dry time is extended on spray can paint. On a typical tractor fender you could expect to use 6 cans or more to get the same thickness of paint as being shot on by spray equipment. Secondly, the over spray problem with spray cans is pretty large. You'll have to cover everything or spray outside. Even then the drift is a problem. If you had even a little cheap Harbor Freight HVLP gun on a nail gun compressor you could shoot liquid paint easily. The results would much better and the learning curve wouldn't be an issue. Besides, by the time you buy enough rattle cans you could easily buy a HVLP gun. If you wanted to stay on the cheap, just buy Rustolum liquid paint and thin it a little.

The "fan spray" of the spray can's is so narrow you will see streaks in larger parts like fenders or hoods due to the fact as you start spraying the paint is already flash drying by the time you get to the other side of the fender and it does not blend together as well. Spray can's are really only good for small parts like brackets.

If you are not familiar with spraying with a gun have a friend come over and spray it.

A friend got nervous at the last moment and had a guy come out from a local body shop to paint his tractor. Guy charged him something like $200 in labor to spray the whole tractor. Of course my friend did all the prep work, masking etc. and supplied all the equipment.
It was just a single stage paint.

like was said below, streaks will be prevalent and it will take a lot of 'rattle' cans as they don't have much in them. they are only good for light touchup on small parts. the best way of painting is with a spray gun. rattle can paints also tend to fade quick and in general do not produce a good job.

Hey dave,
That Krylon paint is the best. We used to spray hoods with it back when i did body work. You can spray fenders and hoods nicely. Contrary to what others have said, Krylon paint won't leave streaks and such. Now all the other spray paints in can will. We tried them all. Krylon isn't cheap and that is the reason. The coats melt right into each other and wont leave dry spots at all.. BBBBuuuttt it's going to be quite spendy with a can. Like others said a cheap spray guy is all you will need. Now days a monkey can spray enamel. Just make sure you read the directions and mix exactly like it says.
You don't need much of a compressor either, with the gravity feed guns. I've used a harbor freight gun and they work great for tractors. You can shoot the tractor outside and do the fenders and hood inside or a protected area for a little better job.
Don't be scared to do it. If you need some help holler! I can walk you through it. I've painted probably 300 cars in my time and learned with the old trial and error method.

TRACTORS ARE EASY!!!!!!!!

Here is what the tractor looked like before painting. It was painted with 10 spray cans and came out good. I am not saying it is better but it is plenty good enough for me. Mosy people that see it think it was done with a spray gun.

There is about 5 coats on the tin work. I know a spray gun job is better but I can never get one set right. I have painted 4 tractors with the spray cans and will do another this winter. First one was 5 years ago and still looks good.

Here is the same tractor 6 months after painting. I know it's not a close up but I see no streaks in it from the rattle cans. So if you want to use spray cans go for it dave.

Unless you are a profeshenal painter you will have just as many problems with coverage with a spray gun (and gun problems as well) as with the rattle cans. As for the quality I believe that the paint is the same between the rattle cans and in the quart or gallon sizes if it is from the same maker, the rattle cans are just prethined to the same consinstancy as what you have to thin the qts to. The rattle cans are all I use, Dad used to be able to get the spray guns to work but not me, tried the one he had and bought 2 new ones and never could get any to work. Stay with a good brand and it will do you good. Now that is where I have a problem is with Krylon, I have tryed it and it never does work, never buy it again as what I have gotton was junk. The TSC (Tractor Supply Co.) and other brands of farm store paint have been good for me.

Krylon is the best for rattle can painting.Goes farther than most other kinds and looks better when you get done.Costs more but since it covers more it might not add up to much more than the other stuff if any.

I use Krylon or Ace. Not perfect, but easy to touch up the normal battle scars.

I also have an applicator handle that gives you more control just snaps in the top ring on can.kinda like an air gun.

Question : Why did my computer screen turn abut 20 degrees colder as I scrolled past that pic of tractor on trailer sitting on that white and ??

I painted my Farmall B (the Lady Farmall) with Krylon, and found it faded badly in about a year. I suspect it was the color, since I've used Krylon outdoors on other projects and it's retained its color fairly well.

Imagine that! You know what they say about a broken clock though, its right twice a day. This must be one of those times for you.So far the day has been good.Cool, sun shining.

In my experiance, Krylon takes 2 or 3 coats to
cover what Rust-Oleum covers in 1 coat
I tried Krylon, once, it was the worst that I
ever used!!! Never again!

I don't know how long ago your experience was with Krylon, but the last few cans I've used I've been very impressed with.

Excellent coverage, excellent nozzle, good price, etc. I think you might be surprised at how far the company has come in the last few years.

Yep Krylon sucks. Rustoleum good. Rustoleum comes in tractor colors and has a clear enamel spary that works great as a topcoat for that continued fresh painted look.
