Gift ideas for welding

I couldn't post on the other thread for some reason but how about looking into a welding class offered by a school? That would be the ultimate gift for a beginner welder. Safety glasses, a padded sweatband, a welders cap or a slip on heat shield to go over your glove would make good stocking stuffers. Do you have a cutting torch? How about a circle cutting attachment or some different size tips. A full face grinding mask is really nice to have too.

Don't worry about a MIG machine yet. A decent one will be a little pricey. You can weld in the cold but may have to warm up the material you're welding first.

thanks for the response...live a little too far out w/ too much going on for a welding class...but someday, when my schedule clears out i hope to learn from experts rather than by trial and error, lurking on posts and reading books.
i like the stocking stuffer ideas!
thanks

There's a lot of good books out there. The Procedure Handbook of Arc Welding is put out by Lincoln and very reasonable in cost. Many people consider it the welding bible. Lincoln also has several books of welding projects that could give you some ideas of things to build. Maybe there's a welder who lives in your area that would be willing to help you with the basics? Do you live close to Puddles? I bet he'd help a newbie in a heartbeat and he could handle any project you had with that 80 ton overhead crane of his. LoL

I worked the DC shop at two units. The first one issued me a copy of this book. It is a great reference book. I completely recommend it.
