GL-1, Questions...

I went gear oil shopping for my '50 8N today around Warsaw, IN and had a tough time finding GL-1, and that was $59.99 at TSC. I find a lot of GL-5, and also a combination of GL-5, GL-4, GL-3 in one bucket. These are at the auto supply stores and Big R. Are any of these oils that are in the 80-90 range acceptable for the 8N's? Does a higher dash-number mean it meets stricter standards like SAE oils? Nobody in any of the stores I was in seemed to know for sure.
BTW, the lowest priced GL-5 was at Big R for $35.71. Thanks in advance for any input.

After readingb Bruce Va. 's very well written article on diff oil, I decided to go with GL-5. After all, we're talking old loose hydraulics and 90 wt was the orig. spec. Got it at Carquest for $33.

John:

GL-1 was recommended by Ford for many years and is still acceptable. GL-3,4,5 oils are not acceptable unless specifically marked safe for yellow metals. (Yes, you can get away using them for years.)

CNH no longer recommends GL-1 but rather 134D. I have used (genuine) CNH 134D in my 1951 8N with good success. It is far superior in cold weather.

Me thinks it's much ado about very little. Wrt to GL-3/4/5 gear oils I think it's more like "get away using them for decades" vis-a-vis years. And unless your 3pt lift is is in sadly worn shape the M2C-134D or any decent UTF equivalent should work fine. If it is "sadly worn" the gear oil is only postponing the inevitable....

As dean said.. you can likely find 'yellow metal safe' gear oil if you look around. at my local walmart.. the supertech gear oil 80w90 gl5 is YMS.... that or any utf meeting the ford M2c134 spec should be fine.

FYI.. 90wt gl1 from napa for a 5g pail is part number 65-205

I'd save that as a flush oil.

While i have heard of using 50w engine oil in stering boxes and rear ends.. i personally wouldn't.. gear oils and utf oils have extreme perssure addatives.. even gl1 is mild ep...

Yep, the GL-5 will be GREAT for the bushings in your hydraulic pump. GOOD LUCK WITH THAT!!

134 thins when hot.It thins badly when hot.Its a 20 weight oil with some red dye and seal conditioners in it.I can pick up a 14 foot 12 inch log in cold weather. In 90 degree weather 3 bales are too much.Use it at your risk.It costs double what most UFT fluids costs.

Bob, called the Chevron Tech Hot Line (800 582 3835), and they said GL-5 is not yellow metal safe but that it has to grt to 165 deg before the ep additives kick in and harm the yellow stuff. Do you think that the oil gets that hot?

He thought GL-1 like their Chevron RPM Gear Oil (90 wt) would be best.

Page 12 of the I&T, FO-4 Shop Manual for Ford Tractors specifically allows the use of GL-5 (SAE 80 and 90 EP) extreme pressure gear oil in these tractors. You and your great grandkids will outlive the tractor which uses those oils.

Page 10 specifies SAE 90 EP (GL-5).

First off I don't doubt you and I'm pretty much of the same mind. But a couple of questions with regard to the citation:

1) What edition of the FO-4 do you have? Mine is very old - only 50 pages or so.
2) Does it say GL-5 specifically or simply EP?
