Gleaner E engine....

I'm probably not going to be able to find a stock engine for my Gleaner E that I am restoring, so my question is, is there a comparable car engine that would do the trick? There are plenty of car junkyards around here.

Very easy to find that Gleaner engine. It's a 226 cu in Allis 4 cylinder gas engine found in the D17 and later versions were used in the 170 and 175 gas tractors.

Early Gleaner E engines had an "M" engine code and were 7.25:1 compression. Later Gleaner E's and all EIII combines had "Z" engine codes with 8:1 compresssion. Either were full flow oil filters. Gleaner 226 engines also had the mountings for a mechanical fuel pump that the tractors did not have. If you use a D17/170/175 tractor engine, you'll need an electric fuel pump.

170 gas tractors also had the "Z" code engines at 8:1 compression. Later 175 engines had 8:25:1 compression.

Keep your eyes out on the classifieds here, ebay, Craigslist, etc. Not hard to find an engine. Mike

Check with industrial scrappers as well- AC power units, used on quarry conveyors, carnival rides, etc. were of several models, including the larger ones.

You didn't say where you are, but I have an E3 engine at a reasonable price.I live at Hardinsburg Ky.

I have an E Gleaner sitting out here that has an engine that I believe is stuck on 1 cyl. Might not take much to fix. The whole combine can be bought reasonably. It is all there.
