Gleaner E into a D17D?

Hi guys, Can anyone tell me whether or not I can bolt-up a gleaner e motor to a D17 DIESEL tranny? Will the transmission input shaft fit into the gas motor clutch? Will the gas motor bell housing bolt-up to the tranny? Any help would be appreciated as I'm negotiating for the D17 now. Thanks, Eddie

Eddie - from the torque tube back a D17 should be the same gas or diesel for a given Series. I believe the 6 cylinder Buda diesels had an adapter plate to bolt up to the torque tube whereas the Allis 226 4 cylinder gas didn't need one to bolt up. Diesels with the 2 extra cylinders were longer in the front and had longer hoods, side frames and longer wide fronts as a result. Mike

Eddie, the bolt-up would be the easy part. There is good information below. The Gleaner E engine (G226) is a great conversion for a D17 gas, but I would recommend a G262 engine (six cylinder) out of a Gleaner C, CII, or early F for your D17 diesel. I used to have a D17D with a G262 back in the mid '90s. The fuel tank wouldn't get you far, but it was a head-turner at shows and a fun rig to boot. Dad and I put a late G262 (Gleaner F) into his D19D years ago. That was a nice clean swap. I've forgotten some of the details but we used the diesel clutch and flywheel, D19G governor, and the front plate was either from the diesel or borrowed from a D19G. Keep the larger carb from the Gleaner F (Zenith 62AJ12) and you'll have a nice power advantage over the run-of-the-mill D19G.

I'm not saying it couldn't be done by any means, but there will be additional work and probably some fabrication involved (unless you find the gas front end parts as Mike mentioned).

Just my $.02. Sorry for being long-winded. Best of luck.

Look back thru the parts for sale ads. There is a D17D high crop in there and a G262 propane power unit also. I think the tractor was listed for $750? The propane motor was $1500?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the input shaft in the trans is different between gas and diesel. If it were me, I'd look for a 230 or 262 gas engine. They would bolt right in. If you have a wide front, you'd have to swap that as the diesel frame rails are longer.

Thanks for all the responses. I had the crazy idea of using the higher ratio diferential out of the D17D for a low budget puller and then, thought I might could use the transmission and torque tube also. This is going to be more involved than this shade tree mechanic wants to tackle. Thanks again. Eddie
