Gleaner M Variable Speed Vibration

Have a lot of vibration...the outer sheave bushing and the outer end of the shaft have enough wear to cause about 1/16" of play between the two...the outer hub end of the sheave also has about the same amount of play with the outer yoke bearing...the shaft and its bearings seem to be running smooth...is the play mentioned enough to be causing all this vibration?...thanks, Jim

I would say yes. It's been long enough that I've been away from them I can't remember, I get models mixed up- but it sounds like you have the yoke and bearing with the little external hyd. cylinder on the main shaft? They did away with all that and put a little piston right in the end of the main shaft/pulley with a swivel coupler and a hose running to it.
Where you grease the sheave on the trans. input shaft it should be tight enough on the shaft that the o-ring in there keeps grease from coming through on the belt.

Thanks Bob...yes, it is the external hydraulic cylinder and the outer yoke...looks like somebody has already had that outer sheave bored and an oversized bronze bushing pressed in it that has now worn along with the shaft...I figured even a small 1/16" of play would cause a lot of vibration but wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something...that play along with the sheave outer hub to yoke bearing play would add up to 1/8" or so...way to much to run smooth

At the very least you need a new sheave and probably a new shaft also. Check the shaft with a micrometer for wear, as it usually wears at the same rate as the sheave that rides on it.

Hope you are luckier, but that has been my experiece with variable speeds on Gleaners.

Joe

Outer bearihg on input shaft of variable to transmission could be out. Variable belt tension makes it hard to tell sometimes. Been my experience on Case combines anyway!!

my gleaner m had vibration in it and it was the inner bearing behind cluth disk.put a bar under sheave on the input shaft of transmission and see if it moves up and down a little.mine was vibrating and couldnt figure out what it was.the bearing inside was shot and broke bellhousing of trans. put everthing in new and its fine
