glowing red exhaust

My neighbor has a 17 hp craftsman rider that runs but the exhaust is turning the muffler and pipe red hot. i think that the engine has somehow jumped timing. He pulled the head and the exhaust valve was white,had the valves lapped and put it back together same thing.

The engine is not running properly,real rough but will idle and throttle up. Any suggestions?

Is this thing new? The EPA has small engines running so lean it"s rediculous.
If it"s not new and previously ran o.k., I"d be looking at the fuel delivery. Or the exhaust valve is not seating or sticking. I wouldn"t run it much till it"s fixed.

The tractor is 6 years old and looks brand new. It has no adjustment on the bowl. It has that electrical thing hanging off the bowl. EPA carb i call it.

Can you punch out any plugs to get to an adjustment?

Timing not likely - unless it partially sheared the flywheel key.
What do your plugs look like?
I ran across a Single B&S the other day where the rubber grommet on the end of the fuel shutoff solenoid had actually come off and was above the stem. So even when the solenoid was engaged, the grommet was mostly covering the inlet. When it did run it ran really lean and hot.

Disconnect wire to shutoff sol on carb,screw sol off carb(turn off valve on gas line 1st or if no valve,disconnect gas line from carb & tie end up higher than level of gas in tank)check that plunger in sol operates freely,reconnect sol & hold body against clean spot on eng block,turn ign sw to on or run position,check that plunger retracts into coil body,remove carb bowl & check for a load of dirt/water in same,check that gas filter isn't plugged up,drain tank/fuel system & check for water in gas.

I had this happen. it was a sheared key, and was firing late, in the exhaust pipe. New key and proper torque solved it.
