glue for plaster

I stumbled over a plaster dog statue the other day and turned it over breaking it into a dozen or so pieces. I want to try to reassemble it but I only want to do this once and I want it to be good and strong. The plaster is gray in color and porous. I went to ACE and they recommended contact cement that seems to be being sold mainly for attaching laminates to particle board. Do you think this will work? Any other recommendations?

If it is true plaster (not ceramic) you should be able to use more plaster to glue the pieces back together.

I guess it is. I bought it at a yardsale and can tell it's one of those statues you make by filling a mold, waiting and pouring out the extra. I'll have to check to see where I can buy plaster. I just come in from taping together the pieces (his head broke off and nose broke into a bunch of pieces). I was wondering about using mortar mix or hydraulic cement to fill or cake to the inside while the tape holds it together. But it never occurred to me I could get plaster. I guess that would adhere to the pieces already there.

Elmers. or any other white carpenter's glue.

Duco cement will work very well-and still give you time to position things after you start assembly. Contact cement will NOT give you time to position things. Greg

I used gorilla glue. Great for poor fit up or tite fit. It will spread the joint when it dries f you don't clamp or tape. Plumbers putty to scaffold odd shaped parts, then peal it off when dry. Masking tape for clamps. I thought of filling statue with hot stuff foam when done, for added strength. Not there yet. Good luck! joe-
