GM mechanics ?? 04 cavalier stalling problem

mother in law has an 04 cavalier 2.2l . car has a stalling problem at low speeds either when just starting out in drive or when backing up. engine will die but will re-start easily. searching the net seems there are a lot of these doing it but i couldnt find a fix. has about 25k miles on it. does throw the abs/check engine/trac off lights, that turned out to be a lt f speed sensor harness. any thoughts?? vehicle doesnt throw any engine codes for the stalling related issues.

Not sure about the '04 model, but earlier models had a Torque Converter Clutch solenoid inside the side cover that would stick and not release the converter clutch. They would act up when warmed up and then work normally when cool. It was a pretty easy and inexpensive fix. To check it out, just unplug the electrical connector on the side of the transaxle and drive it around a few days to see if it continues. If the problem stops, you've found your problem. HTH

Sweep test TPS with good ohm meter. May have glitch in it . also possible IAC valve , Seen some Park neutral switches fail and not rise idle /iac counts do this alsio

I have a 1994 convertible model with only 43k miles on it. It had done this in the past. Let it cool for a half hour and it would work until you had to stop again. I unpluged the connector several years ago, as a shop guy said the transaxle had to come out to repair. Can you expand on the repair procedure?

this is the link I used to change the solenoids on both 1993 2.2 Cavaliers we owned.
The pictures etc are basically the same as the Cavalier, worked for me.
I jacked up the front left hand, removed the wheel and the plastic shield to give access to the transmission end casing. Removed the end casing/cover probably lost not more than a cup of transmission oil.
Changed the solenoid, replaced the end casing/cover, plastic shield and wheel.
I checked transmission oil level after a short, successful road test and everything worked, as advertised, once again.

Tom,
All the ones I worked on were pretty straightforward. Remove the side cover of the transaxle on the driver's side. You may have to loosen or remove a mount bracket, if it has the bracket that comes over the end of the transaxle. It's pretty much self-evident once you get the cover off. The solenoid is held in with 1 bolt and the wiring harness comes already made on. The hardest part is manuevering that connector back on. A new gasket for the cover is all you will need, along with the solenoid. Most of them don't even need any additional fluid added. Hope this helps.

Revredneck, Thanks, also! This car was my Mom's until she passed, bought new in Florida. Has the 3.1 engine and runs really well and fast for what it is. With the price of fuel I need to drive it instead of my Chevy truck.
