Gonna Take A Poll????

Who thinks if I take this burnt IH wide front out from under the 460 and put it on my 300 that it will be OK?

I will put new wheel and thrust bearings and also replace the tie rods.

Will it be OK or did it get to hot for even a little 300 that lives on the hay rake in the summer and a grain auger the rest of the year?

Gary i myself would not want anything off that tractor but maybe some of the gears if it still has oil in the cases . Many years ago my accountant got this hairbrain idea that we could by burnt tractors and equipment and (we) could fix them up well the (we) turned into (I) as he was buying them and guess WHO was tryen to fix . The heat realy messes them up and they loose there temper and become soft. I rebuilt a 720 I H plow that went thru a barn fire as everything was frozen got everything to move again sanded wire brushed and painted only to take it out for a test drive and the first rock that it found even though the automatic resets worked the main backbone bent .The 4430 that and yes i have been knowen to work on a few deeres even though i realy am not a deere guy it went thru a barn fire and here again we went thru it with all NEW wireing new hoses and seals every where, new cab new paint new tires ony to have the ft. end bust . That one got traded to a dealer out in hosisre land for a 3488 that got traded for a 4440 .

I won't be the least bit afraid of that front end.because if I'am looking at the picture right,The 460 plate doesnt look like it is melted and it is alum..Wehave never fixed one back up,but have used a LOT of parts off of them(complete wheel-rim assy.Etc).Put new bearings bushings in and NEVER LOOK BACK.It will work.

By the looks of it that didn't get all that hot so go for it. I'll almost bet you have a 95% chance it will be just fine and a 5% chance it will brake under a heavy load, unless you add a loader and even then it will most likely be OK

It aint hurt. I suspect it has been hotter than that before. The only thing is if much water was put on it by the fire department it could be brittle now. If it cooled down on its own the only thing that would be hurt are the spindles. They can be retempered and they will be OK. Just my opinion. I would give it a try.

Gary it didn't get the front beam that hot, seen them heated white hot to take apart and red to strighten. It's off your DAD'S tractor it's FINE!Steve.

My experience with burnt stuff was that if the bolts come out real easy it's scrap. It looks like it got way too hot to me. That looks like it was a nice tractor. I would put that front end on a retired tractor in a heartbeat, but I don't know about a real user. If you find out that a part is shot while you are on a steep slope or in 5th with the throttle pulled down things could suck even worse. Fires really suck, especially when they involve sentimental stuff, as they often do. How about some old tires and some paint, and a resting place out by the lane?

I would wire brush it, paint it, and grease and go to work.

Not hot enough to warp the sheetmetal... I would say the front is OK.

It really would take a lot of heat to change the metallurgy of the steel parts on that tractor. Or the cast iron parts. I can see where seals, wiring and bearings might be affected, but I don't think a barn fire gets hot enough to change the basic structure of that front end matieral. I would have no reservations about usuing it.

If you are going to save the front end, why not save the whole tractor? Doesn't look like the fire was extremely hot where the tractor was-if the aluminum pieces are not melted, probably ok all around. Can be hard to get paint to stick on burnt metal, though.
