Governor Rebuild

How far on should I pound the drive gear onto the shaft? I have it about flush with the front end of the shaft, but the fiber washer behind the drive gear is not snug against the ball bearing base.

Welcome aboard. First, specify which model of FORD, 9N/2N or 8N tractor you are working on. The governors were different. The 9N/2N used a 3-ARM unit and the 8N used a
2-ARM unit. The I&T Service Manual has a chapter on R&R'g the Governor for both 9N and 8N, and the OEM 8N Operator's Manual has a chapter on making settings and
adjustments. I have an original copy of the Repair & Service Manual for the 9N. The first/early 9N governor did not have an oil line feeding to it. That was added a
few years later. If you have a 9N or 2N and want a copy, my email is open. The later 8N introduced the Proofmeter and that governor was set differently.
Unfortunately, the special application gage shown in the manuals is no longer around unless you happen to have one saved. The setting you seek is spec'd at less than
1/4, .22 to be exact and you need to add or subtract shims as needed. The special gage was made by the K,R. Wilson Corp; suppliers of many special tools just for
FORD Dealers & Mechanics, and it comes with a GO-NOGO setting block. I also have a copy in pdf on repairing the 8N Governor with Proofmeter if you want a copy too.
Don't pound anything too hard, I prefer the term 'tap lightly' and use a wood, plastic, or rubber faced dead blow/hammer. Here are samples if you don't have the
manuals you need.

(quoted from post at 05:25:49 04/18/23) Anyone have a gauge like that? I can make it.
am under the impression that very few of us have such a gauge because the time it would take you to make one would be prohibitively expensive. If I am mistaken, I would like to know. I have three tractors with wobbly governor linkages and questionable performance.

Tim, thank you for the help and time you spent on your post.

Rebuild went well and tractor has been performing great.

For anyone else out there, I would recommend the rebuild over buying a new governor.

I had purchased one and even after a lot of time spent trying to adjust it correctly, no success.

This is what led me to rebuild the old one.
