My 2 N is acting up. It runs well for about 30 minutes and then starts coughing (like the governor is trying to adjust to the load). It spits and sputters and then sometimes dies. I have to limp back to the barn. While it spits and sputters it lurches and this is hard on me just having two back surgeries last part of last year. I did notice the governor is leaking some gas/fluid. Does the governor need a rebuild or replacement or is it maybe the carb? The carb seems to be running ok when it is running. I have cleaned out the gas tank, cleaned the filters, took the gas line off and cleaned it out. Also drained the carb. Any help is appreciated.

It is 12volt. Do have a steady flow with unscrewing the bolt from the bottom of the carb. Have a filter inside the tank for the bowl and then the bowl filter. Found a piece of wood inside tank and cleaned out tank and filters as mentioned. The flow out of the bottom of the carb was after I did all the cleaning. Did not try the spark jump as described in # 13. It is at farm and will not get up there till Friday. Will try that with an old plug. I presume I need to try all 4 plugs. (I am a novice with this machine -obtained it from my mother-in-law) It sat in barn for several years and she only used it for shredding and really no maintenance on it. I have had it for about a year and have greased and replaced parts as I come to them. I just noticed the leaking from the side/bottom of the governor is the reason for thinking it is the governor.

That's just oil leaking from the governor. Get it running first and that can be fixed later.

Means you've got the time and you've never done any maintenance on the tractor, get an adjustable gap plug checker (you only need to check one) and order points, plugs, condenser, rotor and cap for the tractor from this site. Or get all of it from napa. Not TSC. If you don't know how to install points, let us know.
