GP Connecting Rods

When I pulled the connecting rods out of the block I made a mistake and didn"t pay any attention to which way the rods where facing up. I just made sure I payed attention the rod cap bearings and the shims. Anyway here is my question, On both the rods and the bearing caps they are marked with number 1 and number 2 for each cylinder. Does anyone know if these numbers are normally facing up or down. I would assume up but I wanted to make sure.
