Grease buster/ zerk zapper

[Ohio Case]

Well..... as usual I borrow something and it breaks, this time it was my brothers grease zerk tool, you know, you fill it with light weight oil and give it a few smacks with a hammer and it free"s up the dried grease inside. So now I get to buy him a new one, and one for myself. Which one is best, the one I broke was the grease buster out of Waynesville Ohio, it seemed a little weak, or mabey i was getting agrivated it wouldn"t free up the zerk. Which one do you guys like??

I've never owned or used one of those tools. Just fire up the propane torch, heat that zerk until the grease starts oozing out of the little hole, and then put your grease gun on the zerk and start pumping. Never had that method fail.

You just have to make sure you don't get the spring too hot. Dave

Tried one but I could almost never get everything lined up. The auto parts or farm store sells a box of zerks for abought $5. If one is frozen I remove it and throw it away. Clean out the fitting with a screwdriver, spray in WD40 or diesel, install the new zerk and grease it up. The tourch also works but I don't always have it with me, and I am afraid of cooking bearing seals and starting fires when I am in the field, espically during haying or harvest when most problems happen.

I understand what those type of tools are supposed to do but I don't believe it can be done. When I run into a zerk that has 20 year old dried grease down in it, the stuff is hard and crumbly. I have to either take a torch to it to soften the old grease (this works about a third of the time) or just take the darn thing apart and pick out the old grease with a used dental tool (my brother is a dentist) and then re-assemble the whole thing and pump in fresh grease. If the tool is supposed to pump in new grease under extreme pressure, where does all the old cruddy stuff go, eh?

Yeah, Don't get a gf red hot, or it'll shoot that little ball right out at you! I take the gf out, clean, apply heat, if possible, clean again, then install a 1/8" pipe nipple, fill the pipe with Kroil penetrating oil, then cap off the pipe nipple. Then, every time I walk by, or use the machine, refill the pipe nipple with Kroil. You can smell when it eats its way through, and you'll notice the pipe is empty. Sometimes it takes 3-6 weeks of this treatment, sometimes you have to go to stage 2 of my plan. If anyone wants to hear the rest, just ask!
