Grease Fitting

Got the new water pump fitted with no leaks. But I'm puzzled by the grease fitting on the water pump housing. With the pump off, the fitting seems to lead to an opening in the face of the housing. But with the water pump and gasket on, the opening in the housing face is covered. Any ideas what the purpose of the grease fitting is? And by the way, it won't take grease.

Thanks!

The original pump would have had a passage into the bearing/seal cavity for grease. The later style pump is a sealed unit so it was no longer needed. The original pump would have been the style with the threaded shaft. This is another change that occured when Case started manufacturing their engines in mid 1947. Lee
