Green or Red

I posted on the Farmall page. idk this page was here.oops well I am wanting to build a puller I have a slant dash JD A and a Farmall C and a super C. what tractor is known to be a good puller? I do not want to spend a ton of money but I understand it might take a little to get one of the girls in shape. So what you might think I will get the most bang for my buck. I am new to pulling and need to know everything. thanks

Get yourself a Farmall M and the sky is the limit.

Unfortunately I don't think any of those options would be very competitive in stock form.

The A has the most potential, but comes with a very high price tag.

Your only option with the C is a 153 combine motor, but that obviously doesn't make you any friends at a pull when you try to pull it in a stock class.

It will take about all you can do without stroking or power blocking to get the A on par with a stock Super M or Super 88.

If you just want to try pulling for fun, than take either out and try - but have fun and be prepared not to win.

If you are thinking serious about pulling you may want to consider another tractor.

Farmall C and Super C Can be Competitive without a C-153

You Can Make Between 35 and 45 HP at 540 on the pto out of a C or Su C Without Breaking the Bank!

I am a JD and Allis guy. But If I had to go with what you have,I'd lean towards the C. I'd look around for a combine motor. And If I weren't very handy, let someone build the motor for me. I personally like the light classes, get to pull first and Don't take a heavy trailer and a 3/4 ton truck to haul it.

I Missed getting to talk to You at the Mid Alantic Super Pull at Harrisburg,PA!

I Would have Liked to Meet you there!

I Had The Farmall BN !

My BN is a Good Example What you can Do Without a Combine 153!

Just a Oversize Kit for a Su C ! 133 cid!

Ok so I have decided that I will use the C or the super C. the only issue I am having now is my C already has a combine engine in it. 354898 C-123
L 2. and my Super C has the regular engine in it. So I am still trying to find out if the C with the bigger engine will disqualify me from pulling because it is not engine? I would like to use the C because it is a Demonstrator and I think it would make a different puller. But I don't see the point in building it if I cant pull with it. Since the JD A's first gear is to fast I will not use that for sure.

So what is a good set up to make the power in the red tractors? I want to still run pump gas and am thinking of just doing a three face valve job and a piston/ sleeve kit. any idea on which ones? or a compression ratio to have in mind?
thanks

I watched you pull at least twice, I was impressed! I was sure your tires were to little. Boy was I wrong. Vic

Vick You Pulled Well There!

I Would have liked to Pull with you with my Su C But with two tracks at the same weight it was too hard!

I Opted to Pull my Su C at Wauseon with Gene Sellers in 3250 and 3500 div 3 A week later!

Well at least one Class went well!
The 3500 class i was too light up front!
On the Brite Side it wasnt Broke like Some where!

The first gear in the A is not too fast.. you need to say what kinda class you wanna run. If you are pulling in a class that you have to worry about the correct block in that "C", sounds like its pretty much gonna be a stock class. High compression pistons, head, manifold and rocker work will make the deere be competitive in a moderately stock class as long as you dont get too heavy. Ive had plenty of C's on the place, all with 123's and wasnt too impressed with the power output. Besides as light as a C is, a Allis WC with 201 cubes to begin with, without mods will just eat its lunch. The only other option would be to pull the C in 3000 lb or less, but around here they dont have a class lower than 3500 usually. Lots of deere bashers on this board, and yes Im a deere man, but I will give credit where credit is due. All color tractors are good in their own way, my opinion is based on what I see/experienced instead of pushing you toward the "C" because I hate jd's like some would.

I have gotten second to Mr. Sellers's 230. I count that a win. I have said it on here before, it is the best 3250 and 3500 lb puller in the USA. There is a styled JD B that is almost as good. Back to the subject I don't think anybody cares if you have a 153 engine in your C. unless it is NATPA. There is a lot of places to pull besides them. They seem to have decided it is all-right to take the stock block and spend thousands on it instead of putting a little later or bigger engine in it. Sorry I got off subject. Vic

If you have a 3000lb class where you pull, the C would be better since it is about 300lbs lighter than a Super C. I see what you mean about the combine motor though, replacing the original 113 engine. I don't think folks will make a stink about that and to the untrained eye they probably won't even notice. It's when you fit a 153 that people start to question it in a stock type class. I like the idea of pulling the demonstrator too, something different.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

I will thanks for the advice. I am still in the gathering information mod. I want to get all the rules and regulations before I start my build. Also trying to find all the places around me I can pull a 3000# class.

Do you think the C would pull a 4000# class at all?
thanks this is a ton of fun.

"Ok so I have decided that I will use the C or the super C. the only issue I am having now is my C already has a combine engine in it. 354898 C-123
L 2. and my Super C has the regular engine in it." are you saying the straight C has the c-123 in it and the super C has the stock engine because if thats the case they are both stock engines the c-153 is a combine motor and straight C's had the c-123 in them starting in 1950 or 51 i think i just sold a straight C with the 123 engine in it with a stock overbore to 133 you should be fine to #4500

Well then it could be the correct engine because this is 1950 model C Demonstrator. maybe it came with that? What would you recommend me doing to this tractor? I am waiting for the rules from several county fairs that hold the pulls near me. not sure why I have not heard back yet but in any case I know that I am going into the engine and the head. for sure. I am unsure about changing the camshaft though. Any thoughts?

To pull a 4000lb class you will need either more motor or slower gearing. For the C, you can gear down a bit by using a Farmall 240 ring and pinion set. Do a search on some older posts on this forum and look for Andy Taylor's Fencerow Fugitive. He geared his down and has done very well with it pulling 3000-4000lb 3mph classes.

This is a ton of fun and the more you become involved, the better it gets!

I Feel Blessed to have Won the 3250 Class at Wauseon Just Ahead of Genes 230!

Its kind of Bittersweet win Because Gene is a good Friend and i Help him out on Projects when I Can!

Gene and I went to Cloumbia,Mo together in 2010 But I Ended up calling 911 to get Gene in to the Hospital after his Hart Attack on Fri after he Pulled!

After I Found out that He was going to be ok he asked me to Pull the 230 in the Championship Pull and I Dont think i ever Tried Harder to Win Both Classes on the 230 then i did that Day!

Gene is A Great Man and i was Glad to Help Him out!

put a super C overbore in it 133cid shave the head .100 to raise the compression have your cam reground and you shouldnt power out til about 4500 maybe 4000 on a tight track you could also change the ring and pinion out for an overall gear reduction search "tempola" on here Andy did the swap and his tractor seems to run and pull pretty good
