Not trying to bash any brands here but what's with the John Deere folks? I've noticed an insane rise in prices for 3020 and 4020 tractors. Prices from $12,000 to $30,000+. Maybe it's the cost of the dealer repairs driving it.
it seems alot of people are scooping them up for restos. i can rlate in a small way....... i work in the powersports repair industry and ill notice that whatever brand wins a supercross is what everybody jumps to,mostly anyways. im not going to brand bash either but unfortunately "GREEN" is a trend....

I remember as a little fellow ,Dad had a B JD sitting in the yard that needed a mag, and he said a new mag would run about $15.00 and in the day 15 dollars might as well been $200.00. I had no idea what a dollar was .A couple of months later we had a new used mag and we were in business. I really enjoyed driving her.Funny what you remember as a young fellow Hey!

better question might be " why is the Dow staying over 16,000" ??? At least the tractor prices are a direct product of the free market doing it's thing. I guess if all companies trading on the stock market either cut expences by 30% (read employees/bennefits) and/or move overseas to do the same, then even if they sell 20% less ( because of high unemployment/low economy) the bottom line still looks good to the traders/manipulators/speculators on wall st. Barry sure loves it though, but he thinks everyone is stupid anyway.Well,maybe they are,they elected the idiot twice.

My theory is people at around 50-65 years old are in a financial position to buy what they want . They buy what was new when they were young. The 1960's and early 1970's tractors fall in that category now. When I started in 1963 we did not want anything newer than 1939, later the 1940's and early 50's was hot, then late 50's. Now it is the mid 1960's to mid 1970's.
If I got a nice straight and clean 770- 1570 bought for lets say $7500. I could go through tractor radiator to draw bar and have everything fixed well for around $10,000. Of course the figure could vary some up or down in price depending on the actual condition of a tractor but I will use that figure as a example. Is there anyone that would pay $17,500 for a reconditioned CASE or will only the green and some red ones get that kind of price. I have been toying with the idea of totally reconditioning 70 and 90 series tractors for a few years, but I am afraid the final price would be more than customers would be willing to pay, Rod.

I gotta say the idea of a "brand new" 1370 or 1570 for $17,500 would be a steal of a deal. My problem which I imagine is the same problem most Case nuts have is someone else having all the fun rebuilding my tractor! I"m only 36 years old so I can only imagine the impact the "Jet Age" tractors had when they rolled into town. Wish I could have been there to see it in person!

I would love to see good as new 70 or 90 series machines for sale. But I am afraid the market would be very limited. Case people are notorious for being cheap. That's why they buy Case-big value for low money. Still, you might consider offering that service on a custom order basis. Don

Dad bought a brand new 970 in the fall of 69. I was farming with a 64 930 western and he had a 66 930 row crop. Dad, my brothers and I went to look at it after milking one nite. Salesman started it up and we all fell in love with the sound of that Jet-Age engine. My brother bought it from Dad when he bought a new 1070 in 74. My brother-in-law has it now. Good clean 970 yet and has never been overhauled . Case tractors, can't beat em!!
I remember riding on the school bus looking at the new CASE tractors in a Farmer Mag. They were so cool lookin compared to anything else on the market at that time and still are. I begged DAD to get one, to my surprise he did, a 70, 970. Even the green kids were envious. We loved the tractor, owned it for 12 yrs and other than routine servicing never fixed a thing. Rod.
Well... This is a pretty involved subject. I Personally think new Generation John Deere tractors have flat lined in price. Asking & selling price are 2 different things. Clean, Original, tractors of any color bring good money. What's Unreal is the price of certain 2 cyl. Tractors. I myself can't believe JD sold more than 10 total....what a pile.... But whatever. Anything thing odd & Miserable to use brings good money too.. IH 1468... Olivers with detroits..& MFD doesn't hurt cause it's makes it worst to use.. You get the idea. A $12,000 4020 looks like a deal compared to a $15,000 2 cyl.
Rod, this 1070 was for sale at $17,000. A young fellow was asking me about one of my tractors and I told him about this one. I told him $17k may seem like a lot, but go try to find another one. $17,000 is what our dealer sold these tractors for new. My 970 is sold for $10,000. On a scale of 1 to 10 I call it a 8. Now it is sold to my dad,but he looked around for the past year and only found worn out tractors, he Growled about the price and tried beating me up on it, but I told him I'm not Budging. The 1070 next to it will get the same treatment, I have a standing offer of $10k for that one also. The problem is I have a hard time parting with things.
That is certainly the truth, the more odd something is the more desirable they have become. As for the put put deeres in this area seems as though interest has peaked and values are steady and slowly declining and I look for that to continue. The same thing seems to be happening with the letter series CASE but thier value was never over inflated like the put puts, Rod.
Rod, if you were closer, and when I have more spare pocket change, I"d consider sending you my true love, our original 1370. I wrestle between wanting to do an end to end restoration and worrying about doing it right having never worked on anything other than the engine on this beast. As you may recall this one isn"t moving - steering, brakes, hydraulics work but no movement at all, which many of you told me was a twisted spine between limiter and power shift. Anyway, we may be in contact on this some more someday.

you are partly rite ..countin original investment in 1988 of 7500 ,I have spent close to 16 grand on my 4020 psit , it ought to be like new ,,. had to fix everything on it ,lot of folx think deers make great shop tractors , MINE SEEMS TO LIKE IT THERE ,.deers are a real pia to fix ,,,.who ever thought putting brakes on it was so krazy ,,. my cases are not perfect either,, but what I have noticed is that a case can have small problems and a guy can quikly cobble them up and keep them goin without causin lastin harm ,, cant do rthat with muther deer ,, she has to be fixt rite or else,,..
People like to restore/collect the things they admired but could not afford when they were young and broke. To me Farmall SMTA's and 1206's also seem overpriced compared to newer tractors of the same brand.

In the summer of 1970(?) President Nixon implemented price controls on finished goods to try to control inflation. Commodity prices were not controlled. To maintain profit margins, manufactures and packing plants simply reduced what they paid for for farm commodities like grain and livestock. That hurt farm incomes and equipment sales in our area for the years the price controls were in place (1970, 1971 & maybe part of 1972?). That may have reduced USA sales of the later side console 3020's and 4020's. That doesn't explain why 4620's and 1520's of those same years are not collectable.

ss55 more less nailed it. I think most of the insanely high priced 4020s you see are last year production and/or side console models. Guys like my old man that grew up on them are in their retirement now so want to buy that 4020 back. I also think its more of a cornbelt thing as I have never seen a 4020 go for anywhere near $15,000 out here in MT. Worst I saw was a 3020 with a loader go for $10,000. Plus the 4020 is still a handy tractor for loader, farmstead, haying work without the computer crap and Tier 4 engines.
And some models just have more flavor from other brands. Take the IH 1206 for example. First big turboed row crop muscle tractor and you have a hard time finding one under 10 grand even though they are not rare. But the 1256 which is the same tractor with minor differences can be bought for a fraction of what a 1206 costs. AC D21s, Oliver/MM rebadged Masseys, any Oliver wheatland with a Detroit all fall into the "cool" category. Case really doesn't have any models that stand out. Which is fine for some of us trying to collect tractors on the cheap side. I have a neighbor whose husband bought an a JD R right before he died. She offered it to me for $4,000. As much as I wanted it because we had one back in the day, I didn't buy it because I could and did buy two 500s for $2,500.
