GRINDING GEARS?

How much grinding is too much? I can't seem to find a gear my 50 1/2 8N won't grind. Sometime more than others. If I shift as soon as I push in on the clutch, it probably won't grind. If I take too long, it grinds pretty bad. If I wait long enough, it won't grind. I've adjusted the pedal once when it seemed to get worse, but I'm almost out of room for adjustment. Ya think it might need replacing? Or is the is it idling to high? Tia.

its constant mesh for the tranny. a slow 400 rpm at idle is what you want. may have to idle it down. 3/4" for clutch play on the pedal is spec.
oh...whatcha got for fluid? should be gl-1. enough fluid in there?

The transmission isn't set up anything like a car. 4th gears top speed is around 15 mph. The only time I can "shift on the fly" is between 2nd and 4th and that is tricky. There is no syncromesh on any of the gears.

Sounds like mine. I have no adjustment left but the free play is right and it still grinds. The pedal should go down 3/4" then you will feel slight resistance when the throwout bearing touches the pressure plate fingers. Mine is almost ready to split. I will be installing a new clutch, pressure plate, throwout brg, pilot bearing, input seal and flange gasket. Been needing it since I got it in Sept. o4. Now I have to do it since I nosed it down in a ditch to change the pump safety valve. Tranny input is leaking bad and drenched the clutch, now it grinds and will not shift at all.

Are you shifting on the go or when standing still?? You should be stopped and then select any gear depending on the job at hand and the speed you want. Want to go fast in 4th gear?? Then start in forth gear.

You kind of have to shift gears like a semi truck if you want to shift while moving, speed up in a lower gear, press in clutch ,then throttle down put in neutral, clutch again and then shift up. With practice no grinding. We used that technique on an old Ferguson and it worked well.
Do the opposite when shifting down. Otherwise just start out in the correct gear or stop before changing gears.

Doesn't matter if I'm still or moving. If I'm moving, I gotta shift fast. If I hesitate a split sec to long, forget it. My main problem is when I'm moving back and forth with the blade. It'd take me all day if I wait for the rpm to idle. So I shift fast and it's smooth. Shifting at a stand still and it will grind a bit, kinda pops. Doesn't sound any worse than it did 6 years ago, but I feel like it's got to be doing some damage. Doesn't sound like I'm the only one. I kinda figured since there's no synch's in the N tranny, it may not get any better. Thanks for the input. I may try to adjust it some more to see. Later.

I had the same problems with my 8n.Sometimes the clutch worked and sometimes it didn't. I tried all the recommended fix's (spray the shaft, prop a board to depress the clutch when parked act. I finally split the tractor and found that the pressure plate had 1 broken lever. I am putting in the new clutch this weekend
