grinding wheel ??

its 5 inch dia. , threads on to a shalf????whats it for & whats it called, ill try to find a new home for it. thanks ill post picture in help I.D. , dont think i know how to put pic here!

im no expert but i think this type of stone may have been used to sharpen teeth on a mowing machine.

thats what i was thinking, found it in barn. , but it seems aufully big, probly wheighs 5 lbs.

beleive i've seen these in catalogue. called grinding plug. used on large vertical shaft air grinders for removing casting flash in foundries and for joint chamfering in some welding operations. i may stand corrected on this as i've been known to be wrong

The grinding wheel for sharpening a sickle mower is double cone.

This stone is probably that one for cleaning up rough castings. Large would be appropriate for that. Look at 8732A49 at www.mcmaster.com

I would toss that wheel in the trash, AFTER I broke it with a hammer. Old wheels get brittle over time, especially if stored in a damp area. Not worth the risk of getting hurt, to use old wheels.

If the threads are 5/8'ths X 11tpi, it'll probably thread onto a standard angle grinder. They don't go bad from sitting, but if the balance is bad, or if there is a crack, Chuck it!

Old grinding wheels do not suffer from age.Im still using wheels I bought 1n 1970 on my Belsaw tool sharpening machine.You can test wheels for cracks by ringing them.Suspend the wheel on a dowel and tap the edge lightley with a steel tool.A sound wheel will ring, a cracked wheel will not.Many wheels are out of balance and will vibrate.Not problem on rough work but trouble when sharpening tools.Out of balance wheels can be detected on a simple mower knife balancing cone.Out of round wheels can be dressed.Cracked wheels are caused by dropping.Import wheels are all suspect.Always stand aside when starting a grinder,they seem to always let go then if cracked.

Ive used every sharpening method used.The 4 inch angle grinder lets you watch the grinding process.I clamp the knife on my welding bench and sharpen.Dont mess with cheapo grinders or wheels.
