Groundhog problem, fly bait and coke?

I know some guys said to use the fly bait and coke deal on critters before. Does it work good for groundhogs also? I need to get a few taken care of. I haven"t found their hole in the woods yet so I can"t snuff them out that way. For everyone to get a chuckle at and comment on, here are my current critter removal methods (PETA folks look away):

#1--Use a live trap with beer and potatoes. Drink 3/4 of beer, put 1/4 in cut bottom of can or cup in trap with a few chunks of taters. Next morning open live trap and pull out Granpa"s Critter Gun, break action 16 ga. This gun has shot A LOT of coons,groundhogs,etc. in 50+ years. If critter can serpentine better than my shot on it"s way to the woods, so be it. If not, sorry. Sometimes if crop is out, pull out the AR and 30 round clip for rapid fire long range action (wife not always happy with this one)

#2--Rat trap with peanut butter under a bucket for ground squirrels

#3--"Three look rule" for cats. If I don"t know that you"re a good mouser, you get safe passage the first two times I see you, the third is lights out.

if you can locate the hole, i use bridger body traps, you lay them over the hole, stake em down, the hog looks thru it....no more hog. no bait, easy to use. go to w w w dot murrayslures dot com, click online catalog, click traps and snares, click bridger, scroll down to the 160 or 220 traps. about 45 dollars for half a dozen. the nice thing with these if the groundhogs are active, you can get rid of them in one day, no bait needed, and you dont have to worry about poison .

I'm in PETA, but side with farmers on some things. I would get a gun, and take it with me when I go to work in the field. I would see one, stop the tractor, shoot the thing 20 times, bury it, and keep going.

I agree 100% with Glennster about the body traps. They work great for groundhogs, and unlike poison bait or those gas bombs (gopher-gassers) you put in the burrow and light off, there are no ill side-effects and you know when you have been successful.

I used to use a 16-gauge shotgun on groundhogs, but the trouble with that is you need to keep a close eye out for them, and they're not always so foolish as to be in plain sight. Also, you may not be able to get a clear shot, if there's a house or a road nearby.

I have what looks like a #110 (4"x4" jaw spread) trap that I found down in the barn a couple of years ago. (Only has spring on one side of the trap.) There is a chain on one end so you can nail it into a stake so it won't get dragged off, but I use a little extra chain (like old tire chains that were laying around) and attached a retired flail from the Bush-hog. Heavy enough so it won't go far.

When the trap is set, the trigger is a small fork that juts into the square opening. I place the trap over the burrow hole and sprinkle a few stems of fresh hay and/or weeds over it. Just a few, as I believe the groundhog needds to be able to see through it somewhat.

When the groundhog pokes his head up through the opening (or tries to rush down into his hole, either way works equally well), the trap is sprung in an instant and comes down across the neck or chest and also across the hindquarters. It is a quick finish. Most of the ones I have trapped move little, if at all. (I hate to see things thrash.)

If you have serious groundhog problems, buy a half-dozen of the traps. They are well worth the money.

i stake my traps down with an iron fencepost pounded in the ground. had the dang coyotes carry off a couple of my traps that had groundhogs in em. rotten little buggers. now we been getting badgers in the area, they excavate the gopher holes after the little rats and leave a big hole. snapped of a tail wheel on my zero turn mower couple weeks ago after it fell in one of the holes, cost me 270.00 for the spindle. now i carry a shovel on the mower and keep an eye out for badger diggings.

I use a 22-250.With a 6x24 scope and a bi-pod.Don't have to be as close as with a 12 or 16 ga.And always follow the golden rule of shootting.Know what's behind your target.
