Growing old sucks

Only 60 but feel it some days more than others. I do have lots of people ask me if I do all that by myself. They expect some younger person to do the work while I watch I guess. Enjoying life now and plan on continuing to do so. I believe a positive attitude and adapting to change is the way to handle aging and most things.

Well, old age doesn't come with any guarantees. Maybe off topic and no disrespect to Robin but the use of the 's-word' in this post's title certainly gathered my attention. Its use has increased to the point where nobody seems to even notice it anymore. I personally find it offensive. Public figures like politicians and athletes use it all the time now in interviews and comments. I can only imagine had I uttered that at the family supper table back in the 50's. I don't think my dad would have shrugged it off.

I really find the F*** word offensive and yet it is used many times on TV shows and films, kids use it in the street and Ann used to get it in the classroom in the early 2000's. I have heard parents talking to their children in the street using it too. I was known as someone who did not swear during my working life and certainly did not use bad language of any sort with my parents or any of the older generation. I am not a prude, just saw no reason. But then I have grown old. ;0) (Do not like tattoos either).

Only the fortunate get old. Many folks I went to school with have been gone for a quarter century already.
It has been said that with age comes wisdom, but sometimes age comes alone.
I have 3 older brothers now well into their 70s, I dont need a crystal ball to know what is coming for me. Ageing is a natural part of life, and its the second last part of life, just before death. And that can come at any age.

I couldn't disagree more, but how you plan for old age is different for everyone. I am in very good shape (70), fortunately, and walk 5 miles a day for exercise. Hate the walk but like the results. Retire at 58 and never considered a job since. Love golf, hunting, fishing, camping and still enjoy a good tractor show or road trip to a National Park. Live in MI and went to FL for 3 months in the winter until I tired of it 2 years ago (wife never really did enjoy it). Enjoy biking but found my posterior could only take 2 hrs. on the seat so got an electric bike to be able to cover more distance in the 2 hrs. Certainly can't work as hard or as long as I could 10 years ago, but then again, have no interest in doing so. Started planning and saving for retirement at 23 and it has worked out better than I planned. If being able to work hard at 80 is what you want, I wish you the best and enjoy. If being able to kick back and do things at a relaxed pace when and if you want (I helped my son build a 16x24 garage 5 years ago with the cement work), I hope your health and plan works our as well as mine.

i'm two years behind you, and so far, i'm with you. but i know that others have not necessarily been as fortunate as i have been with health. for the moment, my biggest challenge is my arthritic hands and feet.

while i know it's very real, i have always been puzzled by the high death rates immediately post-retirement. working was never the goal to me, financial freedom was. once achieved, i retired early too, and i have loved every moment of it.

The word ''sucks'' as used in this case traces back to the days of the big bands with lots of wind instruments. When a player lacked wind power to blow, they sucked in to get more air in their lungs to blow out again. All while continuing to play. The audiences, in most cases, couldn't tell. But their fellow musicians knew and when discussing among themselves the attributes of their fellow musicians, ''he sucks'' would often be used to describe a player who did just that. He sucked.

Well I'll be darned, I never knew that nor has anyone ever mentioned that to me when I've mentioned my thoughts about it. Makes sense when I think about it now, I'm sure 99% of the people who use it don't know that, not that it matters though. It still sounds offensive to me somehow and like a swear word. Thanks for that Bill ....

On the other hand Bill, I Googled the expression and found a website which I won't post here for obvious reasons. There was a big article and discussion on that site and nowhere did bands or orchestras show up (not that your reply isn't at least somewhat correct). All of their explanations referred to it in a very negative way and you can only imagine the meanings that people connected with the term.

Yes. Well, I didn't go about trying to find that term. It was serendipity, I guess, because I read about it,. online, in an interview with a member of Louis Armstrong's band. Some number of years ago. The interview was of course about the band, Satchmo, and other related things and he told about that as I related it here. I remember Louis Armstrong very well because he came through this part of Central Siberia back in 1952 and '53 and did his performances at a big dance hall located on a beautiful chain of spring fed lakes which Louis liked because he rented 22 cabins around one of those lakes for himself and his band. There was essentially no air conditioning in those days and he loved those cool breezes off from the lakes. I was in high school then and my best friend dated the owner of that dance hall and she would escort us through the gatekeepers who would stamp the backs of our hands and we were in for free. One time Louis was blowing his brains out onstage and then he suddenly stopped, looked up into the lights, wiped his brow with a big white handkerchief and said: ''Here's Louie, just sitt'n in the sun, COUNT'N ALL HIS MONEY!'' That brought the house down and I might add, nobody was dancing when he played solo. Everyone just stood there in awe of that great man.
