if this works, this is the guard straightener i built 30 years ago for my haybine. it will work both over and under the guard, depending on which direction the guard base needs to bend to align the points.

wheee! this is the first picture i have posted on yt. it wasn't so hard after all. this is the description i had posted yesterday (now on page 2).
i made a straightener for the guards on my 469/479 haybine. it works very well when you have to remove/reinstall the sicklebar, or you nail a big rock and the cutterbar starts making distressing noises and running hard.
you need a 3'long piece of 1 1/4 pipe and a 6" long piece of 1 1/2" angle iron. weld the angle iron to the end of the pipe so that 2" of the angle sticks out past the end of the pipe. (if the pipe is galvanized stay out of the smoke). trim 3/8" off the edges of the angle part that sticks past the end of the pipe, so that the pipe slides over the point of the guard and the angle iron goes onto/over the bolt. you can bring individual guards up or down with the tool, and bring the guards all in line so the cutterbar runs much easier.

the part that is trimmed is where i marked the picture with soapstone. hth.

All I ever needed was a 3 foot piece of inch and a quarter pipe. Your addition might have worked fine-

Sorry man, with that thing you cant straigten guards, they are drop forged steel and break when bend.
All you do is bend the toe of the steel strip in front of the guard bolt or stretch the bolt.Been there done that.
with the tool i showed in your former post one can make the guard mounting bar straight as an arrow again. It can be used to bend it(the bar) up or down with the guard in place.

yeah, i should call it a guard alignment tool. it doesn't bend the guard, but the angle iron puts the twist back over the edge of the bar where it needs to be bent to get the guard points straight. not as fancy as yours, but it works.

They once made "mallable iron" rock guards for mowers. No can't straighten the new ones and they are usually worn out in no time anyway.
