my diesel has sat for a year..I bled the lines and I am getting fuel to the injectors..she is not firing to start just burning oil, thick black smoke..I cannot find a coil or magneto or any existing wiring for ignition..it worked fine in the past as it is now..how does it work????? what causes the ignition..my manual does not show coil magneto or anything else does not mention glow plugs..I am at a lost...Thanks..for reading...

Are you sure you are getting fuel to the cylinders? Ignition is caused by heat or pressure, there is no spark. You need to be spinning it fairly fast to build up cylinder pressure, so good batteries are a must. Also an engine heater on the water side helps tremendously. Some diesels have glow plugs for warming the cylinders. Have you tried ether down the air intake?

whoa whoa...it's a DIESEL....diesels firs under a 16:1 compression ratio... please read up on how a diesel engine works, google "how diesel engines work"

check air intake, black smoke usually means air
shortage, blue smoke usually means oil burning,
white smoke usually means unburned fuel, while
engine is cool...

You posted "H-3" which is gas, not diesel.
If you mean a HD-3, then it's got a direct injected diesel engine - no electric ignition, no glow plugs - but might have an electric intake-manifold heater.

The engine works from compression-ignition. It has to crank fast to get past 300 PSI to ignite anything and the weather cannot be too cold - unless you preheat it with a block heater - and/or use some ether (carefully).

with the 5 responses so far I am being well educated..I want to thank all..there are no two answers alike...I had a volks diesel with glow plugs but this is my first diesel tractor.never spent any time under the hood as it was problem free with general maintenance so my best wishes to all respondents and Glenn he is always around someplace...I enjoy the forum and found it to be always informative...

jdemaris have missed your technical responses for the last while. Have you completed your move to U.P. in time to avoid winter work? I have lived in AZ. so long I can not relate to serious winter weather at all any more. Hope your move if made was uneventful. J.C.

No move yet, not even close. We just bought 35 acres up there and just got back home to NY a few days ago after seeing the property, signing papers, and camping up there for two weeks. First couple of days it was tee-shirt weather, then got colder and rainy, and the last few days and all the way home, it was snowing. We had a slide-on truck camper and had to drain all the water out of it before it froze up. One day we tried to cross the big-Mac bridge at Mackinac and couldn't do it because the wind was blowning so hard. Nice thing was though - all the state campgrounds were empty - we were the only people in any of them - except for some deer-hunters laying out piles of sugar beets for deer-bait.

When this time of year comes, I find it hard to imagine being somewhere where you don't have to worry about the cold and starting diesels.

Here are some photos when we pulled over by the shoreline of Lake Huron. My little kid did NOT want to get out of the truck. The wind was blowing so hard it knocked my little kid over and even my dog could hardly stand the wind.
