(quoted from post at 23:21:09 02/25/10) 1944 H with gasoline engine. (Probably converted from tractor fuel by a dealer in the past)
ken

No, not converted. The X1 suffix on the serial number means it came from the factory as a high compression, gasoline only model.

Sorry, but I stand by my post "converted by a dealer", at least in this part of the country. The number of distillate engine H Farmall tractors outsold the gasoline engine tractors by maybe 10 to one. When the older H tractors were traded in distillate fuel was no longer available. This happened in the late 50s or early 60s. To be able to sell the traded in tractors with distillate engines, the dealers changed enough parts on the tractors to enable them to be tagged X-1 gasoline engines. Most dealers did the proper parts change, but some just took the starting tank off and changed the manifold. I've owned several H Farmall tractors, and I've found several Serial tags with x-1 on the serial# tags that were no factory original. One had the X-1 stamped with a screwdriver or some other tool, but still had the hole in the hood for the starting tank. The head had the part # ground off and the piston # were origonal distillate flathead part #s. I suppect IH had a kit that the dealers ordered to make the converson and many were done this way. Most were probably done correctly, but some were not. I lived through the end of "Distillate fuel" tractor fuel and remember the period well. Sorry for the long post but just want to keep the record straight. ken

To do a complete conversion from distillate to gasoline would have involved replacing the low compression, distillate cylinder head with a brand new, high compression, gasoline only cylinder head, replacing the distillate manifold manifold with a new gasoline manifold, rebuilding the carburetor to gasoline specifications, and several other things, all of which would have been a major expense for the dealer, and I really doubt that any of those dealers would have gone to that much expense, simply because doing so would substantially reduce the profit they would get from selling that H. Any dealer that would alter the serial number and grind off part numbers was commiting a crime and should have been put out of business.

My H is 48888 has the little tank. I burn gas with lead additive. Don't know if anything has been changed or not. the manifold has the lever on it.I've had it for about 7yrs now it runs great.
