H Questions?

My wife just got me an early birthday present, this little H is serial #18003 is it a 40 or 41? The previous owner claimed it to be a 41. My second question is, it needs a new manifold, where is the best place to get one? Do they make an aftermarket manifold with gaskets? She got me my first hand start and so far I love it! Thanks for any info.Scott

Scott - congrats on your new H tractor. Your tractor is a 1940, and I will bet she rolled off the line on or about April 1st, 1940 - give or take a few days! 1941 production began in July 1940 with SN 20615.

After-market manifolds ARE available. Steiners used to carry them, but I am not so sure at this stage if they have any left. Cost-wsie, the price on them @ Steiners when they DID have them was $225 - gaskets extra. If you want me to scout around and find you one, give me a call (386) 624-7916. (PatB)

Theres a manifold listed on ebay right now think it goes off tomorrow around 8 central time. i think its like $25 right now. the item number is 290408404297.

Pat, I believe steiners still has the H manifolds. Could be wrong as well but I would highly recommend going through sharps www.oldjd4u.com about the same price. Theres a few on ebay and im looking for one myself. Another popped up yesterday ending time this coming friday. Good luck.

Thanks for the info guys.
Pat you helped alot with my first B.
Is the carbs about the same as the B.
I'm going to pull it apart next week
and put in a parts order to Roberts.
Thanks again

The carby is probably a bit less complicated than the B - for one thing, no baffle for the bowl vent - that kind of thing. But generally, pretty straight forward! The JD-H Restoration Guide 3rd Ed has a complete overhaul routine for the H Carb as part of its Chapter 8, so if you have access to that book - it would help.

As for drill bit sizes on H carbs, the Primary IDLE orifice takes a # 60 drill bit, and the Secondary a # 57 drill bit. All of the other carb IDLE channel segments are the same size as for the B. Remember - the primary orifice is the one on the manifold side of the throttle valve. (PatB)
