Hard Starting A

I have a "49 A which has good spark, fuel, and air, and still starts really hard. When it does run it runs really well which makes me rule out carb issues. I am probably overlooking something small but I am stumped and would appreciate all and any advice. Thank You and God Bless.

Is it a coil distributor ignition or a mag?? If the start timing is slow they dont start so good but if its too fast thay tend to bump the starter and kick back. Id be taking a look at its timing for one thing.

As far as carburetion, is she throwing much smoke when youre starting it and how much choke does she like and does that make a lot of difference ?? You may want to insure just where the choke throttle plates is relative to where the choke rod is placed.

Im thinking timing or a choking problem maybe for now based on such limited info.

Has your tractor been sitting for a long time?My 37 A sat about 2 years or more. I put a kit in the carb checked the tappets checked mag timeing and put points and condencer in the only way it would start was to pull it. After a few times of pulling it i guess it loosened up now it starts easy .Every thing was rite on mine but it wouldnt start unless i pulled it thats why i asked if its been sitting it may need run for a while to loosen up everything.

What type of distributor/mag does this tractor have?

A weak spark is usually to blame for poor starts. Take one of your plugs out and open the gap up to about 3/16-1/4 of an inch. Ground the plug on the frame and hit the starter pedal. Did the plug fire a sharp blue spark across that gap? If not look over your ignition system.

Are the points clean? Is the coil wired correctly? Do you have metal core wires? Does your ignition have a resistor in front of the coil that has too much resistance? All sorts of things to ponder.

If this tractor has a Wico XB distributor remove it, throw it in the ditch and buy yourself a Delco distributor with an external coil. You'll ask yourself why you didnt do it earlier.

Sometimes little things make for a hard start. If you turn off your gas to stop your engine the carb throttle shaft will almost always be wide open after it shuts down. My A starts real hard with the carb throttle shaft all the way open so I pull back on the throttle lever to close the carb then reopen slightly. Just a thought.

I'd check the idle 'secret' passage on the carb too. Once running other things may be compensating to give the illusion of running well.

If it is a Wico XB distributor, write me. I will take it.
Aside from cleaning/setting the points once in a while, I have never had a problem in 15 years since I had my two rebuilt.
Both my tractors start and run great ever since that time also.
I only have about 2 acres that I work the ground up on every year. Winters up here where the snow covers the ground for about 5 months, is when my tractors get most of their work-out. Usually about 20 cords of firewood and plowing all the white stuff away every year. Maybe I'm just lucky with the XB's???

Assuming it has a DLTX 71 or 72 on it, what condition is the choke spring in? If it's weak, badly out of adjustment or has the wrong windup they don't choke hard enough to start well. A bent choke plate will also cause starting trouble.

It has a distributer and coil on it. How would I go about checking the start timing? She doesnt like much choke and doesnt throw any smoke.

Thanks I have tried about every throttle position to get it to start, it seems random at what position it starts.

It has all new points, condenser, rotor, and cap. I am getting great spark. Delco Remey Distributer. Thank you.

Thanks i will try that. It has sat for about a year an a half. I rebiult fan shaft, put new radiator on it and tore the rear apart and put new seals and gaskets in it. I only worked on it every so often so it took awhile. Thanks again.
