Hard starting

Hello. I have a Perkins 6.354 in a international pick-up that I bought last year. I rebuilt the pump because it was leaking.
Rebuilt the injectors because I had them out and it was hard starting. Unfortunately it is still hard starting. At 25* F and pulling it over at 500 RPM it still is very slow to catch. It takes awhile for all six to fire. Once warm it runs like a top. What could be causing this. The thermo start helped but it quit again. I dont have a massy but I know the 6.354 is in some models. All thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks.

Have you checked the timing and perhaps set the valves? Perkins usually start good in the cold when everything is set right.

Perkins is onto something there. These are "bullet-proof" engines as a rule, but the injection timing is a crucial area, that needs to be correct.
Does it blow blue exhaust smoke when cold, but not use oil between oil changes? Maybe some wear in the worm & wheel (auxillary drive), that drives the injection pump, a common problem with these engines, that have chalked up quite a few hours.
Let us know what you find,
Evan.

As Evan has said look for wear in the pump drive. This is actually difficult to pin down as it won't look so worn when you look in there but it can be so badly worn as to put the pump timing out by 6 degrees.

Ditto, BTDT. My first purchase of a 3000 Ford D required ether to start in 60+ degree weather. I didn't know what that meant. Many frustrating attempts to solve the problem later, I finally bit the bullet and overhauled the engine...in short, low compression cannot generate enough heat to cause the diesel to explode when injected.

I looked this up yesterday for Ford tractors and beins tractors use the same fuel, one would think that these numbers would be similar for the industry:

Gas 200 rpm cranking 115-150 psig with 25psig max variation
Diesel 200 rpm cranking 420-510 psig with 50 psi max variation
