Hauling charge

What would be the typical hauling charge to haul a 560 Farmall 250 miles, so to return home it would be a total of 500 miles

I can't imagine a professional, licensed, bonded, insured, whatevered driver these days would do it for less than $3 a loaded mile.

Anybody telling you what they had something hauled for 2-3 years ago is out of date. Fuel is still through the roof. $5 a gallon diesel and averaging 8MPG (assuming the typical diesel dually pickup and big 10-ton gooseneck which gets 10 empty and 6 loaded ON A GOOD DAY) it's 63 cents per mile for fuel alone, and that's in BOTH directions. So $1.26 per loaded mile just for fuel.

A pro has to make truck and trailer payments, put some money away for tires and maintenance, and provide for their family.

I recently paid a tractor trailer lowboy to haul a loader backhoe I own 500 miles round trip. They changed me $1000. You may do better with someone running a heavy diesel pickup truck and trailer.

If you have a bit of time and can get it on a load of partials it would be your cheapest way to go. You could get it done for less than 2.00 and possibly closer to 1.00-1.50 might be wrong here since I have not had anything hauled or hauled anything in about 4-5 years now.

Are you contemplating doing a custom haul job yourself, and wondering what to charge?

Or, are you needing the 560 hauled, and wondering what is a fair price to pay?

Haulers generally charge by the loaded mile, and include the empty return miles in the loaded mile rate. If they can find another load to bring back on the return, it's ussually a benefit to them that they don't share with the first original customer. Extra gravy in thier pocket, so to speak, that don't always happen. Probably don't happen all that often with a pick-up and trailer on a short order un-scheduled haul. But, if they are in that business, it would increase the chances.

If your doing a custom haul, kind of as a one time deal, you basically just need to cover your time, fuel, and wear and tear (pro-rated maintenance). Most guys forget and not allow for the last part. And they'll end up in the hole over time (if they continue to haul) for not allowing for general maintenance. About the time thier tires are shot or thier engine is wore out, they realize that they weren't charging enough. But this isn't really a huge factor on a one time haul. Especially if your also kind of doing it as a favor to help somebody (a friend) out.
