Hay Knife

I'm in need of a hay knife to make feeding large bales to the horses easier. Does anyone know a source for new? or good usable?

Pat,

You talking about big round bales? There's an easier way.

Stand your bale on end, cut the twine off with a pair of tin snips and it'll unravel like a spool of thread with just the use of a pitchfork.

A chain saw works too.

Before we put a big 8' sliding door on the side of our barn, my dad would use the chainsaw if we ever bought any roundbales to feed. He'd cut it in pie shaped sections with it set on end and then use the wheel barrow to bring it in the barn.

I'll ditto the chainsaw idea. Could use veggie oil for bar oil so it would be less toxic.

My father used to have a knife just like that. There are special chains for chain saws

I have one. Looks just like the one in the picture, and im willing to sell it.

That was my plan to save money on horse hay, but there weren't any big rounds available nearby that were clean enough, too much moisture damage, moldy on the bottoms, between the bales, and in the center of the bale. So I got 3x4x8 squares of some good irigated brome grass grown just north of Kiowa, Colorado. When we loaded the guy gave me the "middle" bales, no bottom bales, and no tops that had not been under the tarps.
