Are the hay prices being good to you guys? Was curious what you were seeing and if you think the price will continue to rise until pasture comes back in April?

When you say price being good, it depends on whether you are buying or selling.

Are you buying or selling?

East central Oklahoma: round bales grass, $100 - $130 per bale. Square bales good quality grass, $10 to $12 per bale. Square bales alfalfa, $18 to $22 per bale.
Winter and cold temps are here. Woke up this AM to 16 degrees. Don't see hay prices dropping anytime soon. Have lots of people wanting to lock in a price for the 2012 crop.

I think I was told a few weeks ago, Phoenix was selling hay $16 a bale, small square bale, and going UP. Rumor even had it one place was all but shutting down, demand had already depleated supply...though there still bailing. So great if your selling, but terrible if you've got horses or cattle.

I have to ask, what livestock is worth feeding 22 dollar a bale hay to? I have 8 beef cows and feed 15-25 steers from calving or 2-300lbs to finish per year. The steers are in the 650-800lb range right now and Im telling you if square bales cost me anywhere near a third of that theyd be going down the road. To me its like anything else, I cant feed 12 dollar corn to hogs how can anybody feed 22 dollar hay to anything except a rabbit? I guess Im glad I feed them my own commodities.

Up and going up... I both raise my own hay to sell and buy for resale. Today I had to change suppliers and am looking at inside 4x5 rounds, horse quality with good color at $55 f.o.b. 5x4s are out there cheaper but they dont haul as singles in a pickup and they sure make a mean load 2 wide on a trailer. Outside stored can be had for 20 or less in 5x5's. I had 400 at 45 and they were gone in 2 weeks.

I think its lack of supply and a good cattle market driving it. Too much weird weather almost everywhere and too many acres going to corn and beans.

My last load to Texas had 42 rounds on it, hay went out of here at 40 each with 3500 in freight on top of that. Not cheap feed.

David,
I have been doing the same thing as you. Buy to resell. I called a round about a month ago and alot of people within 150-200 miles had hay for sale at reasonable prices. I bought 100 rounds, and didnt bother securing more. Now, a couple weeks later, things have really gotten tight. A lot of guys arent going to the hay auctions because all their hay is spoken for. The people that have hay have pushed the price up, or shipped it to Texas. Alfalfa in my area is next to impossible to fine.I have a skidsteer for sale, and as soon as that sells, all my extra money is going to go fill a barn full of hay!

Here in Texas I'm selling horse quality 4 X 5 1/2 rd bales for $130. The freight to get it here from Missouri takes up 1/2 of the price. I'll bet hay here in Feb/March gets to $150 or higher per rd bale.

Is Texas still in a drought? Does grass grow in the "winter" in texas? So your saying the situation is still headed in the worse direction and not in the better???

The drought has been getting a little better with some much needed rainfall but is far from over. We still need pond/lake water. Winter grazing of small grains and cool season grasses is helping some. Weather guessers are still reporting the drought will continue into next year. I even heard some weather guessers state until 2020. Cattle are still being sold in record numbers.

I wish I was closer. I have approx 800 tons left to sell in 1500lb rounds and am struggling to move it. If any interest of a true longhaul truck trip I am in NE Montana

sorry about the slow reply. I am in Glasgow MT zip 59230. The bales are approx 1400lb rounds ranging from straight alfalfa to straight grass. They are stacked seperately by type. I would provide tractor for loading and would like $70/ton. I would deal some on volume. If interested four oh six 263 eight 55 eight. If I don't answer or am slow to reply it means I am at work. I work approx 2 on 2 off
