head for farmall m

I hope someone can help me out I have a mild built farmall m with more or less stock m head. I have a 450 head already but I keep hearing from people to put a 450lp head on. my question is what is the horse power difference gain between the two heads is there that much difference between them? Just trying to figure out if the extra added cost of a lp head is worth the added horse power difference of the 450 head I already have that I could put on. thank you to everyone that could help me with my question in advance.

I suspect you are making it a puller. If you really need to win at all costs, then go the other head route. Otherwise your head should be fine, just find a GOOD Machine shop and have them plane/shave the head a wee bit. You will probably get as much horsepower gain.

if you have a stock gas 450 head have large valves installed do some porting shave it if you want more compression and you be good to go....

I'd like to thank everyone that responded to my question. I guess I'll figure out what to do the way it sounds the lp head is the way to go. I do have one more question though if everyone could help again it will help me make my decide which way to go. If a person had 70hp with a more or less stock head what kind of hp would he have with a good 450 head with a valve job vs a 450 lp head thanks again for everyones help.

When doing a build you can't look at the gain of one single good part, you have to look at the gain of all the good parts put together. An LP head is the beginning of all the good parts you will need.

Bob,
If you go with a lp head they will have larger valves to begin with but have a set of oversized valves dropped in as well...it will cost pretty much the same....then if you go bigger in future it's already done. you can get oversized valves for your gas head as well...a lot of guys still run gas 400/450 heads port them and shave them if you need more compression....but just that like mention will help but need to do everything.....need to buy a lp manifold and intake and port match them to head next is carb is it stock or did some work on it? if its stock let someone bore it for you...or do the proper mods...needed for your motor set up. someone like Gary baker can steer you in the right direction..
I hope this helps
Kelly
