Head Gasket replacement issue

So I've finally got around to replacing the head gasket on my 1610 due to lots of bubbles and coolant filling the overflow bottle after about an hr use, white smoke and gas in the coolant.

Had the Head checked and resurfaced by a specialist company, Cleaned/Tapped all threads, bolts, (could tighten them by hand)
Torqued to 79ft.lb Warmed/Cooled, Torqued again (needed a bit) Gave it more of run and re torqued again (third time) but I was still getting a small amount of bubbles about one a second so I re-torqued to 80ft.lb and still getting some? Grabbed a different torque wrench from the local workshop that’s regularly calibrated and that clarified the torque was correct 80ft.lb (if not over)

What seems to happen is I get a few bubbles after a few minutes I then lift the rev’s and they clear, take it for a blast (about a mile full throttle) and they stop and don’t return? Not got it really hot yet or worked it.

Doesn’t seem like compression as I guess it would get worse as it get’s hotter and worked not better?

Do I just run it, do I need more torque or is it Something else? Aghhh!

Sounds to me like you have done everything right. I think a few bubbles are possible on start up. I would run it some continuing to monitor what is going on with overflow bottle. Watch oil level and condition, also watch coolant level.

Short answer is run it and see what happens. <E></E>

Ok, Tried it again this weekend, warmed up no bubbles, took it for a run no bubbles, connected up the brushcutter and 15 min in they started! they even carried on one a second 5 min after switch off.
I'll try one more re-torque and then I give up.
I have a new Radiator cap from Hoye to try but the tabs are too big to fit in the slots in the radiator, is it just a matter of trimming them down?

That is very strange. I guess you are sure it isn't overheating and starting to boil?

I'm not really sure about the cap. Are you sure the radiator is original? I don't think I have ever heard of the tabs being too big before. Would you be able to attach a picture of the two caps?

I’ve trimmed the tabs down but not had chance to try yet.

Interesting. I will have to go investigate our radiator cap selection. I don't remember seeing any like that before. It looks like the tab was just too long to get into the slot so what you did should work just fine.
