Head Gasket ?

Hello all!
I'm working on my super A and decided to DeCarbon the valves and all. I received the head gasket today from yesterday's tractors. The head gasket # HS3148. It says, sealer/retorque required. I know these engines have leak problems sometimes. anyone else get a head gasket requiring sealer? What type of sealer should i use? thanks. Ken

Copper Coat spray on product is my first choice. I put on a first thin coat both sides, (hanging
the gasket on a wire). Then after about 15 minutes, I put on a medium coat. Not dripping off! I
apply the gasket when the second coat is just a bit tacky. Jim

Thanks Jim. Sounds like the right thing to do. One more question, what are the torque specs? I'm seeing 65 lbs. and 85 lbs. Thanks Ken

What I use is permatex copper , fel pro told me to only use it on the metal side ,and not to much.dont want it not to seal with to much .

I gave my block a good scrub with non clornated brake clean and brass platers wire brush as clean as yo can get it . Wipe clean ,the head I
had the shop do clean up cut of 005,6 . Also had the, pressure test it while it was in shop before the clean up cut.

Run a half twenty thread die down all your studs and run 1/2 20 tap thru all your head nuts for cleaning. Oil them with 30 weight.

Torque head gasket, it down to 70 pounds in three steps (30, 50 and 70 foot lbs)in sequence like the manual say starter in middle work
outward like the manual sayes.

Let it set for 20 minutes to cure.

Load coolant and run for 30 minutes get it hot ,retorque as to 70 ft lb.

Recheck torque in 30 days

What I did ,do it the way you want

Oh if you have the studs removed tap out block with 1/2 13 bottom tap ,shoot some ,little bit , brake clean down threads ,wait then vacuum
out crud. and run a 1/2 13 thread die to clean thread studs .

I set all my studs in block to protruding 4.04 inches they will be even .

Good luck tried not to miss anything .

Used copper coat spray on 15+ head gaskets over the last year.... Re torqued every one after they got hot...... Never had an issue.

(quoted from post at 10:35:48 07/24/22) Hello!
Looks like the rocker assembly will need to come off to do the retorque of the head.

Just leave the push rods in the head and then after installing the rockers check the valve clearances. Personally I never liked doing them with engine running but some do!

I like to use the valve over lap method. When both valves are tight on say #4 set those on #1, same for #2 and #3.

Hi Dave! Since it has studs, I'm going to 70. more than that the deck might start to move around the stud area.

Like the others, I also recommend the re-torque after a few hours of use. When I last replaced the head gasket on my 'H,' I torqued to the spec (70 ft-lbs), but then discovered some were down to 30 after running a bit! I was working in the cold (January, unheated shop, temp in mid-teens), so that likely was a big part of it. Mine was a self-sealing gasket, too.

I ran the A for about one hour and let it cool down. Did the same thing again except the last cool down I let it cool overnight then did the retorque. I might retorque it
again after ten hours of run time. thanks to all that replied to me. Ken
