Head Update

Update.

Got head surfaced, and got it back.

Set head on tractor, no gasket, started 2 bolts.

Pistons hit head.

UhOh

Now, how to tell exactly where problems are?

Ah, wheel grease sitting close, put light coat on tops of pistons.

Sit head back on, turn over engine remove head.

There is what I needed to know.

Work on head with drill and grindrock.

Do over.

Still hits.

Do over.

Still hits.

But getting a lot better.

Do over.

a total of about 7 or 8 times.

Pistons no longer hit head without gasket.

Finally.

Clean up everything good again.

New Fel-Pro Gasket

Got head sit back on, and bolts snugged down.

Very tired

Quit for day.

Will it hold up?

I don't know!!


One note, before I was thru grinding, I had most all of the tops of the pistons with a light coat of wheel grease, more than is in the picture.

I'm in the same boat. Had my head planed .030, have not had a chance to see where I may have clearance issues.

I'm sure there's a good reason but never heard it, why could the gasket not be doubled? Would 2 not completely mate?

I have heard folks say to do that, but a blown head gasket was my problem to start with.

I wouldn't feel comfortable squashing doubled fire rings together on the gaskets, I just don't know.

The heads grind easily and quickly, but I took my time, as I didn't want to remove any more than absolutely necessary.

I am not saying that it won't work.

Won't be the first time!!

Back in my electrician days, we used to wire a lot of very old houses 100+ years.

All of them that had burned coal had this black powder in the attics, I could work on them a day or two, and hopefully git done by then.

Black boogers.

By day 3 or 4, even if I got done on day one, I had a sinus infection that only anti-biotics would cure.

My nose was having trouble dripping.

But this pollen lately has been having some bad effects on me for a month or more.

I have re-wirwed many houses that the whole house was running off of one 30 amp screw in fuse.

A 110 volt meter, and base, only one leg.

Knob, and tube wiring.

The tubes make excellent knife hones, a rough ceramic they are.

I still have a 110v meter base, and meter in the attic, they make beautiful lamps.

I just never got around to making the lamp.

I bet I done 60 touch yer toes, running the 18? head bolts on the wire brush on the grinder cleaning them, and the threads, it kept taking them away from me and slinging them.

The back of my leg muscles are sore from that.

I needed to adjust the "rest".

I do need the exercise though, BAD

It is very good for me, no matter how bad it hurts.

At least that is what I hear.

I got her torqued, new oil, filter, etc...

Got the Ole Lady and her daughter to help me set the hood back on her, hooked the gas up, and she fired up.

I let her run for a good 30 minutes, checked the temp of the water in the radiator, 159*, no thermostat, no shroud.

Cur her off, set the hood back off, and re-torqued.

I pulled the wire tube off, as I broke one of the legs off of it, trying to straighten it, and didn't feel like fooling with it.

So I had to wire tie up some wires, put the hood back on and she didn't crank, WTF?!?!?!?

Oh, heck, I only put a small amount of gas in it, as I knew I was going to set the hood back off, I bet it is just low on gas.

Put in gas, fired right up.

Put all hood bolts, and grill on.

Plowed about 45 minutes, and ran out of gas.

Ole Lady is gone after gas.

She is running as good as ever, I am calling it a success!!

Bottom Line....

Presidential Solutions, matter NOT, as long as they work!!!

The way I went it cost less than $40.

The other route would have probably cost about $200.

That is not counting fluids, that would have been the same cost either way.

The last, about 5' of my exaust on my Blazer, in it's former life, was a drive shaft for something, and it is suspended on electric fence wire, it has lasted MANY years.

You are correct in a partial sort of way.

Fel-Pro has been making No Re-torque gaskets for many years for automobiles.

They are some of the most awesome head gaskets.

But this gasket is NOT a no re-torque gasket, I do NOT think they make them for flatheads.

My preference in gaskets for ANYTHING important has always been Fel-Pro for over 30 years.

They couldnt't be beat for the non-cork gaskets for Chevy valve covers.

Ell, I needed a running tractor, not a conversation piece.

I hope I can get up to the 6 to 8 hrs of bush hogging that I am way behind on.

I got a GOOD once over on the garden this afternoon.

Like I said, there have been [b:63fa263477]many[/b:63fa263477] posts on this FINE forum, that I had for guidance.

Thank God for you/us guys that are willing to share their experience.

Nuttin wrong with cork and the rubber is not a good fix either

The problem is 4 mounting points and a tin cover

Little know to alot of folks is GM has a fix,,, a kit that will pert neer eliminate cover leaks forever

The aftermarket tried to copy it but its a waist of good money to by the chrome straps,,, that bend when tightened down,,, GM's does not,,, they apply a continuations clamp to the cover and will sprang back to original shape when removed

GM Part # 1408516,,, works on must GM engines 4-6 or 8

Takes one kit per cover,,, $18 retail per kit,,, forget cover leaks for the nezt 10 years are more,,, I had a set on a 350 for 15 years,,, not a trace of a leak,,, cork gaskets used 8)
