Help identifying a distributor

Hello,

I have a 1951-52 8N with a side mount distributor. This tractor was given to me, but I am unsure of most of it"s history. The distributor is not an original, but I can't find replacement points or condensor. The photos are located in the "help identify" gallery. I could not post direct links to them due to being new to this site. They will show my handle "JB3" in the description.

Never looked at a side mount...here is one of the pic's.

I have a set of those odd balls on the shelf. But if you go to a local parts store and browse through their illustrated ignition guide you will find them, I believe that dist is an Autolite 4000 series. Good luck.

irtually certain it is a Prestolite. Points still available. Will look, might have number.
Yes, Prestolite & it looks like YT and TISCO have parts for it. A fellow who posts under handle brownchristian has one and Dunk searched out numbers & sources for him around August 19, 2009.
If you look around the postings near this link, you will find the info.

Some International trucks and tractors used the Prestolite distributors. Some even had a pressed paper distributor plate. Talk about a nightmare!!!!! If the weather was damp for long the paper warped and the points gap was impossible to keep set. IH did some strange things. I worked at an IH dealership as a mechanic for about five years. I hate IH tractors!!!! But don't tell anybody!

ane, I'm still working the change from leather window straps to window crank year for the "T". I also have a Prestolite for a 350 Chevy/Volvo Marine application and seems to be a good distributor, looks much like JB3 & brownchristian photos...no paper breaker plate....so I hate to see them get an overall bad rep........on the other hand, they are no longer in the automotive distributor business. Electric motor controls & the like I think.

looks like the one in my 8n. i had a hard time finding points and distributor cap for it too. i found an old timer at a mom-and-pop auto parts store that said it was a distributor off a mercury bobcat. bought the points and distributor cap and they fix. tractor runs great.

I looked at the part numbers that was shown in the above post, but they do not look exactly like the one I have. Also, it appears that the points are riveted to the plate. Are they replaceable or do I have to purchase an entire plate? Thanks in advance for your help!

o they are not riveted. The riveted part is just an insulated connection point for wires, etc.

The points just slide off the pivot shaft. the rivited wire connection point stays on the backer. It's a prestolite... All the older point type mercrusier inboard/outboard boat engines used them. See your local Boat dealer ask for points for a 1970 120hp mercruiser I/O. take the old points with you to compare...should be the same.

Hmmm....... Ineresting you say that....

I have a boat, with a Mercrusier inboard/outboard, that I gave $100 for boat, and trailer. The prievous owner seems to have forgotten to winterize.

Yep busted block, that I haven't went into, but it is a block like would be in a '93 Chevy S-10, nearly.

I guess it must have EI?

I need to go look that thing over again.

It had a new alternator on it, a good battery that I found a use for and everything else seemed good, except for getting water in the oil, it all seemed in good shape.

I would have given the $100 for just the trailer.

I figured one day, I would get needy, and I could part it all out....

Nice deal....Slap a 4.3 liter chevy block in her, swap over the externals and get her in the water. The basic long block is the same as automotive, just has different exhaust manifolds,carb,ignition.

I don't know if I will ever have a use for a boat again.

In 1988 I paid $13,000 cash for a brand new, 18' Bass Tracker, Fish and Ski boat, about 4 years later I nearly snatched a man's arm off with $4000 in it.

Haven't been fishing one time since then.
