help needed on S77 dsl

Howdy all,I was wondering if anyone had advice on my oliver...the problem was getting dsl in oil. I changed the lift pump...didn't cure the problem...so I took the hyd head off the injection pump. The tractor was running fine...just thining oil. It looks to me that it could just be the o rings around the hyd head itself....however the head does seem to be rather tuff to turn with a screw driver. My ? is should I just try the O rings...or try to locate a rebuilt hyd head or get mine done? The number on the bosh hyd head is 3173A. If anyone knows of a place to rebuild this that would be great too.....thanks.

You have 3 places where diesel fuel can enter the oil. The most common is the lift pump. when you changed the pump was it a new pump? How much fuel do you get in the pan say in four hours of operation. The two O-ring sealing the hydraulic head to the pump body are not your problem. Neither is the hydraulic head. if you don't believe me, spend $800.00 on a head put it on and the problem with still be there. How does the tractor run> How good is the compression? How good are the nozzles? More questions?

Ok........first up...as I stated in my post earlier...TRACTOR RUNS FINE--PERFECT...engine rebuilt probably 1500hrs...no smoke...starts great. In other words---THE PROBLEM IS NOT A FOULED NOZZLE OR POOR COMPRESSION.

second...the lift pump was a brand new one.

The amount of fuel increase in a four hour run is probably....hmmm...half a cup. This may not seem like a ton...however it didn't do this before........and it started this "overnight".

As for the hyd head question....this is what the repair manuals point me too....I didn't just come up with this notion....so if this is such an absurd Idea...maybe you should contact the IT tech manual people and tell them so???

So...if you have any usefull ideas on the problem...I would appreciate them..thats why I post questions on here in the first place...for ideas...not to stroke others egos.

First thing. On the O rings if the one on the control sleeve leaks you will get fuel in the oil. The one Larry talks about seals oil and fuel. If your tractor starts when hot your hydraulic head is fine. Next thing the last one we had trouble with had a bad thermostat causing fuel in the oil. Engine did not warm up properly engine ran fine but under light loads did not have complete combustion. At one time we probably took care of 200+ Oliver diesels with PSB pumps. So I am going on some experience. A wise old consultant told me once there is no such thing as a diesel engine that does not use oil. If it always stays full you have a fuel dilution problem including incomplete combustion. Price a hydraulic head and change if if you want to it is your money. Next question does it gain fuel setting without running. Just asking.

Thanks for some more direction and input. To answer your ?...no it doesnt' gain oil when just setting...so its only doing it while running. The reason for me wondering about the hyd head is basically because the book told me to look there...and I did....now the o rings did look a bit old and flat...not real good looking. The reason I ask about the head itself is because it seemed sort of hard to turn....I could do it with a screw driver....I don't know....it just seemed kindda tight.
I'm thinking maybe to try the O rings on the head and sleeve?????? Does the tightness of the head sound right to you?
Again....The head is off right now....and just wondering were to go from here....
almost forgot...yes...it starts fine when hot.

When the hydraulic head is worn they will have trouble building pressure to open the nozzles. That is why I asked will the tractor start when hot. (thinner fuel). There are 5 O-rings if yo take the pump off and take it apart. The one on the pump flange the 2 that seal the head to the pump body. The 2 key ones are the one that seals the control sleeve to the body. If it leaks you will get fuel in the oil. The one that seals the little bronze filter (The little fat one) As a rule of thumb if it leaks your fuel turns black as oil is now leaking into the fuel.On the turning you are O. K. Start it once with the exhaust manifold and see if you get a couple of puffs of white smoke. Let me know what you find. By the way your I & T book was written over 50 years ago so they are not going to change anything. J.

Hi John I'm very impressed that you were still willing to help after you were badly mistreated. Your knowlege and your willingness to share it with others is commendable.

Ok John, thats what I'll do then....replace the 4 orings...2 on head and 2 on the control sleeve. This might take awhile to complete with farming and all...however I will put a post up with the results. Thanks for the info on the orings and all else.....as for "mistreated" as brock calls it...all I was asking was for input...I had a problem, researched the book...and asked based on what the repair manual told me. Thats why I ask on this forum in the first place...to seek others advice who have dealt with things before. So the other guy can take a chill pill....there was no disrespect or mistreatment givin. Thanks again...I will post results...sorry in advance in the time it will take.
