Help Seeding Bromegrass

I'm trying to seed a small hay field in bromegrass. I have been told to mix oats with the bromegrass in the grain box.
How much oats would you mix and what is the best rate per arce?
I have a ih #10 grain drill with a grass seed box on the front for clove and other grass.
Thanks Jeff

Didn't work for me. The awns of the brome seed stuck together and nothing fell out of the drill. The only way I've been able to plant brome is by hand. Usually if there's a couple MPH breeze, all I have to do is hold up a hand full of seed and wiggle my fingers and the breeze will spread it nicely.

A special drill made for seeds with awns may work. The JD FB that I had didn't.

a few drills have brome agitators in the box to keep it mixed as it will rise to the top when mixed with oats, other option is stop on the ends and mix it by hand. I have done it and it and got a stand.

I've had great success planting brome with a warm season grass box on a notill drill and poor success every other way I've tried it.

If you can find what is called a drop spreader/lime spreader.( just like the drop seeder you use on your yard but bigger) Set it for at least 17lbs of PLS (Pure Live Seed) per acre. Now I've done this both ways. #1 put the Brome seed down then drill wheat or oats shallow with the #10. #2 drilled wheat or oats with the drill then put the Brome seed down with the drop seeder with a drag (harrow, chain, old bed springs) to cover the brome seed. Then pray for the weather to be right. Don't know where you are Jeff but here in Kansas it is pushing the latest date to get a good stand of Brome.

Jeff, I have a John Deere 750 drill and have custom seeded brome for a number of folks. I have always put brome and oats together in the main seed box. My drill does not have an agitator in it. I will usually put in a small amount of oats at a time and will mix the brome with it. If you put too much in the box you will have bridging problems with the oats. I set the drill pretty shallow. I have had good success doing this. Just remember not to get the oats/brome mix too deep in your drill. Only drawback is you have to stop to fill a little more often. Hope this helps. Mike

Thanks for the help
I have tryed to seed it before with a hand seeder but that was a joke.
I live in east central Minnesota and want to get to makeing my own hay for a few horses I have.
This is a great site and I have learned a lot here Thanks Jeff

If you're still there, I do the same thing with the same drill. I couldn't tell you offhand without looking what the setting is on it,but I'm thinking around 24-26. That'll get you 3 bushels of oats and your brome. I generally put some oats in the box, dump some brome in,mix it by hand, the rest of the oats, more brome and mix it again.
