Help! With IH 720 5 bottom plow

Just purchased this 720 in Illinois and hauled it back here to Ohio. Took it out to plow under some corn stubble this afternoon and started to pull it and the plow bottoms popped right out of the ground after just a few feet. I mean all of them.....How do these arms lock down? Am I missing something on this plow? I seen a picture in a manual and it showed spring tubes attached to each plow shank but said it was a option. Hope someone can help me out... Thank You

Manual trip.

That double leaf spring on top is the release deal - if the spring moves too far, it will over-center and the top 2 pieces will kick up like in your picture.

There should be very thin shims on the leaf springs, I had to remove a shim on one bottom that started kicking out on me.

Odd to have all of them do it? Mine is a 4-20.

Just was reading about this on another forum; don't throw the shims away if you take any out, fella said Case wants something like $15 or more each.

Odd that all pop out, but it's all in that top joint that you have way up on the one bottom. It overcenters 'downward' very very little, and as the leaf spring flexes, makes it over-center upwards and pop. Very very little difference, very thin shims.

Check for loose bolts on the springs, I had that once too. Any dirt in there?

The problem arises from rust building up under the shims. This puts the center pivot up too high, and the bottoms trip. You will have to remove enough shims to have the center pivot slightly lower than the end pivots. See that bolt hole about 4" behind the pivot? If you can slide the right size bolt through the hole, it's adjusted properly. To remove the shims you just have to loosen the top two bolts- don't have to remove the bolts. If the bolts won't loosen, you can saw off the shims one at a time till things are adjusted, but of course the shims will be ruined. Good luck-

The plow you are talking about is called a toggle trip plow upon tripping the idea was just lift up the plow and it would reset itself it was a cheaper plow to buy then the auto resest spring plow, I owned one its is kind of a pain if you get in a rocky field, Internation Harvester built them for years before selling the plow part of the company to Arts Way Mfg, if you go to there site it might show how to adjust the tripping mechanism.

Well, I believe it is fixed! Spent time today taking out all of the shims on each bottom and cleaning them off with a wire wheel and then lubricating all of the with a good bath of oil> The rust was terrible in the shims pushing up the arm so it wouldnt go over center. They all snap down now. Thank You for everything!!!!!

things change as you go east, I plowed some cornstalks, would have done more. Your post should have said scrap it and get a 588 White/500Case plow!
