Hercules Engine Water Pump Removal

Could someone provide a few details of how to remove the water pump from a Hercules engine?

I was able to remove all of the hoses, but can not figure out how to remove the pump. Can someone tell me what the assembly is that drives the pump? It appears to be a oil pump and is mounted close to the fan. I think I need to partially disassemble it to remove the water pump.

I am trying to go slow to not damage the cast iron pump as I am sure it would be dificult or impossible to replace it.

It probably depends upon which Herc engine you have; can you advide the model and post a pic?? I think some do have (had) an oil pump at the front, and on some (HX,JX,QX5) Motor says you have to remove the mag or dist, but don't have to remove the front timing cover...with sympathy, Bud

The engine is a IX series. Specifically IXA5. It has a fairbanks morse generator attached to it.

Man, that baby"s really sandwiched in there...unfortunately, the only IX"s in my Motor are thermo-syphon, no water pump!! If no one with real knowledge shows up in a day or so, you might consider posting under Tractor Talk--it"s not technically the right forum, but it gets a lot more traffic; I know there"re people here familiar with these, it"s just a matter of their noticing your post. That's not a generator but a magneto ignition unit. I'd say if you see some type of coupler on other side of water pump then remove the magneto and bracket and then the water pump should come off next. I can't see it that well in pic but maybe a cover on front of that shaft or gear where it needs to be taken loose to take a gear loose or whatever maybe to let the shaft slide on out with the water pump.

I can't see them in the photo, but most stuff of that era would have "packing nuts" one either side of the water pump. If your's has those, simply unscrew them, and tuck another wrap or two of "water pump packing" in them, and snug them down 'til the leak ALMOST stops.

If that thing is new enough to have unitized seals, and has to come out of there, it will be a REAL nightmare, unless you have good instructions, and are familiar with getting things back "in time".

Don't EVEN THINK about taking things apart, 'til you have the engine set on #1 TDC, have located the timing marks, and checked the postion of the rotor, inside the mag's "cap", and documented the postions of ALL the spark plug wires!

Sorry I didn"t get back to ya sooner James. I took a look at that picture and it doesn"t look familiar to me at all. After rebuilding water pumps as long as I have I am still amazed at what is still out there. Good luck to ya

Are the "packing nuts" held in place by the pins that run through the shaft?

I have included a photograph of the nuts on each end of the water pump. If these are packing nuts, the job will be much easier than expected.

Also, I have had the mag off several times and was able to set it via finding the number one cylinder. I was able to get it to run, but it ran a bit rich. I am also trying to figure out how to fine tune the timing.
