hesitation under load

My T-35 has recently begun running rough when under load (for example, if I am cutting thick long grass or going up a hill). The engine seems to cough and hesitate. The tractor idles very smoothly and runs well when not under load. I recently checked the air filter system. Could this be a carburettor problem? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give. It could be but make sure that you ignition system is up to snuff. You should have a FAT, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK when you pull the venter terminal of the distributor cap, hold it near a good ground and attempt a start.

IF you have a FAT BLUISH-WHITE SPARK then richen the power jet an eighth of a turn at a time and see if the engine accelerates smoothly from low idle to high idle.

Do the check in this order. Richening the mixture will usually improve the situation with a weak spark because a richer mixture ignites easier. But if the root cause is poor ignition system performance, it'll be a temporary fix.

I had the same problem with my 1957, T035.
Problem solved by new tuneup, make sure all electrical is in top condition and all specs set correct. I run a D21 plug, hot plug, seams to burn this gas we have now better.

I poured 1 can of SeaFoam carb cleaner in tank, I think this stuff helps, others thank its snake oil. My two cents.

Problem sounds like its in the power needle of carb. I had to start opening power needle 1/8 turn until tractor would take fuel under load.

Later, after plowing, heavy service I normally turn needle back some as its too rich for just puttering around in barn yard pulling the wagon.

Took all these steps to solve my missing spuddering problems, runs great now. Remember these tractors are 50 years old and compression may not be in top condition.
