Hesson 5530 Rounder

The belts on my Hesston 5530 have a rough side and a slick side. I have recently inherited the baler and found when baling and it begins the roll 90% of the time it will start slipping when bale is about 8" in diameter and maybe after 30 seconds it will grab hold and start turning, and sometimes it will just keep packing hay in the take up area and then you have to stop and clean out . I checked everything and all I can see is that ,I think the belts are on wrong side . In the roll making area of the baler according to manual the ruff side of the belt should be against the roll as it rolls. Now daddy is 91 and he never noticed or knew . All of the belts except one are running with slick side next to roll, Is this my problem?

Not familar with that baler, but could the belts be too long?

As for which side of the belt bears against the roll, I would go with what the manual says.

KEH ,thanks for your reply, I'm thinking like you and will follow the manual . I thought maybe I would be lucky enough to find some that was familiar with the Hesston . you mentioned belts being loose ,they are not tight but I would say they seem like they could be a little loose. In the manual it just says they should be I think 364" .Like I said I inherited this job from my 91 year old Daddy and until I showed him what it said in the manual he never knew it told that in the manual. I am going to turn them over and when I do I will measure. Thanks again

I run a 5500. IME they want the hay nice and dry, especially at the start of a bale. Any dampness will cause the situation you describe. I think the belts obviously should have the chevron to the bale, that'll help too.

Belts might be worn out. Easy way to change the belts, is to use an old belt, lace to a new belt, and use the old, to pull in the new. You have to install the pins that hang on the sides of the baler, in the horizontal holes, near the top of the baler, to take the slack off of the belts. Also check the pickup bars, that the fingers bolt to. Mine were bent, when I bought mine, and after a groundhog hole hit or 2. If they are bent, the fingers will look like an arc, when viewed from the side, instead of being in a straight row. To straighten, open the door, flip up the safeties, and hook a come-a-long up, to the bar, and a sturdy point in the upper structure, and tighten it up, till the bars are a little past straight, then let them spring back to straight. Also check to see that the internal blade (not sure what it is called, but it looks like a blade) is not frozen. It is supposed to rotate, a 1/4 turn, as the bale starts. Just baled 20 bales in an hour and 40 minutes, today, not too bad for pulling it with a D-10 Allis!

I have a 5530 and maintain three model 530 (newer version) balers. When you look at the baler from the front, the rough surface of the belt should be facing you (facing out). These belts do not have chevrons. The surface is called 'mini rough top' and the back is called 'covers'. If it has never had a set of belts, it would benefit greatly from a new set, especially in starting a roll. I buy from Ex-Cel belting in St. Louis,MO. You can get new belts from them for less that half of what AGCO gets for them, and the quality is the same. Their website shows prices at $117.68 each for the 5530.

These are good and simple little balers, in my opinion. The give very little trouble. Ex-Cel also manufactures aftermarket gathering wheels for these balers. I have installed three sets of these and they work well also. Ex-Cel is 1-888-731-1012.

The only time I have issues with my 5530 is with over dry or short, coarse/flakey hay. Will usually start the bale OK, but sometimes when it takes a big clump in, it gets out of round and won't turn. Wet doesn't bother it - My daughter used to put up wrapped sileage bales with it with no problem.

thanks everyone I believe from what you all have told me .The problem was the belts turned over , like I said Daddy is 91 and has had it sense it was new and has never read the owners manual..It sounds as if this baler is a good dependable baler. I have the belts turn over and intend on cutting a small field tomorrow and maybe by Sun evening try baling and see if the problem is solved.Thanks again for all of you help, I will let you know how it goes
