I do have the ratchet style starter from a 3.5 hp engine, not sure if that would fit yours or not. I cannot get the whole thing off the crankshaft though, I put a puller on it with a lot of pressure, but it won't come off. If you need, I do have the balls that go inside and the top piece and the cover. Let me know what you need.

Well, I do have the bottom peice from the old one, but need them bearing like things. I bet it would fit. Its worth a try, what are you looking for for it? Does anyone have any clue how to put this tuff together? If I understand all this, then Andy, you have that 4 sided shaft for the top, the top plate, and the bearings or balls or whatever for the inside, and this would supposidly work with the bottom peice I have, i guess. How wide are the bearings and the top peice? If it'll fit, then what do you want for it?

The starter cup is RH threaded on the crankshaft and holds the flywheel on. you'll need a special tool to remove it OR be really careful and creative with a channel-loc pliers. the flywheel should then pop off with a few taps of a soft metal or dead blow hammer to the end of the crankshaft. When re-installing it you need to apply 60 ft-lbs torque to the starter cup.

Install the flywheel WITH the aluminum key, then place the belleville washer over the crank and thread on the starter cup and torque to spec (if you don't you likely will shear the key). Install balls and then the square drive (a little light lube on the crank first). No put the dust cove on and the leaf screen.

If you want every thing except the lower part, I'll take $10 for those parts. They are all in good shape.

Sounds like you are describing the starter clutch. They are new about 12.80 each. part number 399671 at your local briggs dealer
