High temp paint.

What are you all using for manifolds. I've used high temp black before and it held pretty well. This time on my Super M. It's only got couple hours just idling around and paint already coming off. What's out there.

Nothing. All paint is based on volatile compounds and binders and pigments. Some of the pigments are actually heat resistant metals. The other stuff can't stand more than about 400 degrees. Stove black finish is about all that will stay on for a while, but it does not stop rusting, thus it also goes away. Ceramic coating will work, looks great, is costly and isn't normal looking. My thoughts are: they are supposed to look like they do. Jim

This outfit might have something for you. When I used their high temp paint years ago I had to bake parts in oven. No guarantees.

I suppose you could use a coating called JET-HOT. It's a plasma coating, goes on hot, kinda looks like good cadmium plating. Lots of hot-rod guys coat their exh headers with it. Be warned. It's not cheap, but it works.

i just finished a cub and used epoxy primer then top coated with urethane enamel. I've found that the high temp paint doesn't last so i thought i would try something different. Its only has about 4 hrs on it and so far it looks good.

I just bought a brand new manifold for my F-20 and I used VHT. There is even a primer available that says it will help.
It s $10 a can at Autozone. Since I want this thing to last a long time, I used the primer then the black. I have heard good reviews about VHT so I wanted to try it. There is also a pretty specific curing process you have to follow to get the best results. The can said it doesn t prevent rust until it s properly heated. So far after a few runs, it looks exactly the same as the day it was painted a few weeks ago. We ll see what it looks like in a couple years.

I used Por 15 high heat paint on a set of headers once. it stood up very well and after a few years it did not flake but was thin so I just brushed more on again

The only thing that I know of that really holds up to the heat is high temp ceramic coating. Ceracoat offers a color that looks a lot like the color of cast iron, great stuff. Maybe you can find someone in your area that applies it, there is a guy in Ettrick WI that does at Premier Powdercoating.

3L, old post I know, but I'm doing the same with my 37 F20. Did you use the VHT engine paint (500F) or the flameproof (1500F)? Flat black, or gloss? How did it hold up? Thanks, Evan
