Nieghbor that been in piggin since he was little 50 years, had the F.I.L. bring his 20 sows, nice sows, 7 or 8 bred, to the sales barn because he has no corn to stay in it. He called a few days later and said he only cleared about $800. What a shame.

I have been tracking pig prices since 1968 when I started in the industry and they are the same now as then.
What with high grain prices, imminent closing of the biggest slaughter plant and the high (for us) Canadian dollar, come spring there isn't going to be much left of an Ontario hog industry.
Pork Producer's Marketing board(selling agent only, no price setting function) laid off one-third of their staff and stopped reporting prices a few weeks ago.
I am lucky enough to have my debts paid but I still miss the sows, but if I still had them, I honestly don't know what I'd do.

Hog industry in PEI is all but a thing of the past. There are only a handfull left and I don't honestly know what keeps them going.

Ontario is the same way.
The Packing plants are putting the small and med size producers out of business. The same way they they eliminated small and med finished beef producers. The packing plants now own most of the feed lots purchased at bargain prices from distressed producers.
Its a wonder the packing plants didn't come up with a BSE type scare for pork as they did with beef?
