Hey guys, I have this old trailer single axle solid frame trailer, plywood is rotted out, Im going to rebuild it. It has no ownership or registration. anyone know the process in registering a homemade trailer? Does it need a safety check or something?

Go to your local licence office and ask for a form to fill out for a home built traler, it will ask specifics, like dimensions , weight ect. You should have working lights on it at any rate....once completed you register it and will be issued plate and ownership slip...I think the fee is $ 10 for the plate and $5 per registering, I could be wrong on the price, but it won't be over $ 20. Ihave one to register and have to go through the process as well. I do not believe there is a safety check required, but in your description form ther are questions about tires, tire size etc.

Here in the US each state has it's own rule's.
Don't know about today but at one time, here in Michigan a trailer did not need lights for day time travel.

You might find what the requirments are for your area on the internet. Just do a search for DMV for your state.

Its even simpler than I though, did mine this afternoon, all they asked was how many axles, cost thirty five bucks in total and I don't think you have any renewal fee ...a bit more than I thought, but hey, now I don't get fined for not having a proper registration!

I would just go to the DMV office and tell them you want to register a homebuilt trailer. Here in NY one of the first things is to get it weighed.A certified weight slip is a must at our DMV to start the registration process.Unless you are really close to a scale and just take the chance on not getting stoped by the local law, the DMV will give you a temporary tag to tow it to wherever the scales are.Small trailers under 1000 lbs. are a piece of cake to register. The process listed on the DMV web site isn't really as complicated as it sounds.

I used to be in the garbage collection buisiness and once found a trailer in the trash. Yes you read that right. I found it in one of the dumpsters. Anyway it was a nice trailer. Just needed some floor boards and was good to go. I fixed it up and went to dmv to register it and eye eye eye what a nite mare. They asked what kind of trailer it was and I told them I found it in the trash. They said so it is home made? I said no I found it in the trash. They said well who made it? I said I don't know I found it in the trash. They finally put it down as home made but clearly this was a factory built trailer. So I told them that is not right but as long as I don't have to sign that to the best of my knowledge this info is correct then what ever you want to put down is fine with me. But if I ever get challenged on this I want to have them call you so sign your name very clearly. She got real nervas over that and had to go talk to her superior. after about 15 minutes they both came back and demanded I tell them who built that trailer. I said I cannot do that as I found it in the trash. Short story long they finally put it down as home made and signed it non-ledgebly and I paid the fee and went on my way.

That sounds like my experience, only I was on the phone to DMV.After about 5 minuites of frustration I thanked them for "all thier help" and hung up.My trailer came with some property we bought.I finally went to DMV one day with a weight slip, said I had a homebuilt trailer to register and was back out the door in about half hour with a plate and registration slip.

Here in MO if the trailer is under 12 feet including the tongue all you have to do is fill out some papers. If over 12 feet you must have the trailer inspected. To many stock trailers were stolen and the registered as HOMEMADE.
