It got a bit hot here today , broke a 100 year record for this time of year .

It made me wonder how hot it got where the people I read about on this forum live .
This is unusual for us , certainly for December but we do have mild Winters where snow is a rarity.

I heard on the radio up here that some areas down there were going over 50?C.
That is around 150?F up here. That is DeathValley temps for the US. Send a
little of that heat up here.

In Wisconsin USA I would say 30C is common, 32-36C little less common. 40 C only occasionally.
If I was in AU right now I think I would cross the ditch and attend the Rhythm and Vines Festival.

We will be above 0C here today for the first time in about 2 weeks. We have been at or neatr -30C twice in that time. I thought 50 in Phoenix Arizona was like standing in from of an open
hearth furnace. Jim

It got pretty warm here yesterday Thursday
here to. It was almost 40 cousin n I we're
setting traps in sweatshirts man what a
beautiful day it was sun shining no work
lol doesn't get any better

Charles.... My brother lives in
Australia, Temora NSW, I talked to him
yesterday he claims it was 112 f ! I
told him I would swap, it was only in the
40's in central Al. I much prefer the
heat.

107F is rather toasty for December.

Reminds me of that old Midnight Oil song, Beds are Burning..

17F or -7.???C here this morning.

I live near Dallas Texas.

According to the record keepers, the record high was 45c in 1980.

I remember that summer well, working in a shop that the doors faced west. The heat went on for a couple months.

The record low was -22c in 1899. I don't remember that one.

But I do remember a bad winter, either 1979, or 1981, it was during the same year that it got so hot, the temp went to the -15c range and stayed below freezing for about a month. I was living in a rented dump of a house with no insulation. I left the water running in the bath tub to keep it from freezing. Sometime in the night the drain froze, the tub filled and just before it overflowed the plumbing froze. The water in the tub froze solid!

All the plumbing froze and busted the galvanized pipes. I had to re-plumb it, on the cheap with PVC. But the line from the street to the house was frozen, didn't thaw until March, 3 months without water!

Obviously we are better equipped to handle heat than cold here!

Looking back, as a 25 year old, I could handle the heat better than the cold. As a 64 year old, no way I could handle either one now, not living without proper HVAC anyway!

We spend the winters in the Phoenix valley of Arizona, but not the summers! The record high here is 50 C, (122 F) but now in the winter it's about 20 C, (67 F)
perfect!

I was stationed at Yuma Proving Ground in the 1960s. 50C+ was a normal summer temp. OAT gauges on the helicopters were pegged at
50C. Needle wouldn't come down off the peg until climbing through 1000 feet. One day I just kept on climbing. At 13000 feet the
temp was right at freezing.

(quoted from post at 07:12:41 12/20/19)But I do remember a bad winter, either 1979, or 1981,

I vaguely remember that. Was one of the very few Winters when I saw snow -- just barely enough to cover most of the grass. We had a white Spitz puppy at the time. He just sorta disappeared in the white stuff.

Ya'll get snow every year in DFW area, right?

The past eight winters (four > six Months ) we've spent in the Phoenix valley at our home in Arizona, USA... The record high here is 50 C, (122 F) now in the winter it's about 20 C, (67 F).

Our summer home North Western Alberta / North Eastern British Columbia Canada.

May 10 C > 20 C (68 F)...June 16 C > 25 C(77F)...July 19 C > 28 C (83F)...Aug 16 C > 25 C(77F) ....Sept 9 C >24C (75F)...Oct 6 C > 18 C (65F)

Bob...

Yesterday the high was roughly 32 F or 0 C, if you are asking about the present. Well within the "normal range" for latter December.)

In summer, we can reach about 105 F (40 C), but very very rarely. Normal summers have just a very few days higher than 98F (37 C). Normal summer highs are more like 85 F (30 C).

Winter lows are rarely below 0 F (-18 C), though it might hit -8 F (or -22 C) very very rarely. Normal lows are more like 20 F (-7 C).

Since most of Australia sits between the 15 and 30 latitude it is hard to compare Australia to the USA.
To put it in terms us from the north would understand Australia sits between Florida and the US virgin islands.
So they have the weather we would associate with Mexico's desert and 50 degrees C would not be odd there.
