What can you tell me about a Hough 60 with the Cummins diesel engine. Straight frame with cab with 2.5 yard bucket.
Owner says it doesn't have any brakes.
I was looking for one to put a snow blade on to just do my own personal snow plowing.
I have a Ford with the V-10 with a Western plow , but have always wanted something with 4x4 in a wheel loader.
Is the brake issue a money pit????
Cummins any good???
Is Hough a decent name???
Won't be loading any dirt with this.
Just an ole guy looking to play in the snow a little.
May be a late 60's machine.
Thanks for any thoughts--wife doesn't care what I buy.

Hough is arguably the greatest name in loaders! Cummins are arguably the best diesel engines. You need to provide some more specific information on the condition of this particular machine though.

Haven't seen in person yet--talked to owner and saw ad. It is a power shift has a good cab with heat. Tires look decent from what I can see.

Owner says it doesn't have brakes. Delived at about 200 miles for less than 5K.

I agree with this other gentalman cummins, engines are very good, maintained on reguler basis, even better, hough is a good name in the industry. that said get some numbers off this machine get prices on brake parts and avalability. you doing the work or a machanic, some time its easyer and cheaper to take to a pro, they have the tools to do this type work faster and safer.

Agree with the others. Hough (pronounced Huff) was the pioneer in loaders back in the day.

A 60 is quite a bit of loader. Axle steer is not as spiffy as articulated, but then there are no big center hinge pins to wear and get so bad sloppy either. That steering clunk gets old.

The brakes thing is common on the older ones of that series, but can still be fixed. With hydro style tranny you don't absolutely need brakes so they tend to get ignored. RedPower has some related threads in the construction section.

Generally speaking if you haven't driven one, driving a construction grade loader will completely change your opinion of ag equipment.

How difficult and expensive is it to get some brakes on the Hough 60.

Will be using on my own personal private driveway.

Thanks

That I don't know. Several people on Redpower have a 60 or 70 and the brake topic has come up. Some searching there might bear fruit.
